My 500-megahertz FireWire PowerBook either goes by RoadWarrior or Artemis, and you have to see its logo... It's also known as plain cool.

My 333-megahertz Lombard is called plain beat up.

My ugly AMD Athlon PC that kicks Ca$h's iMac in 3D performance ( ) is called "K7" on my network.

My iMac (revision B) is called BondiBlunder or iCrack, because it only has 32 megabytes of RAM and I stripped the screw, preventing future upgrades.

Well, I hav only named some of my Apples...
The ones that I truly cherish:

Newton uMP2000 - "Pocket Rocket" 'cuz of its power and that it (almost) fits in my pockets

2nd Newton uMP2000 - "Dint" Its currently in pretty bad shape, the previous owner was abusive. And my boss pronouces "dent" as "dint"

Lime iMac333 - "Ghost" because its ghostly translucent, and is mostly active at night

PM8100/100 - "Nubie" Its nubus... which p*sses me off

Well, my SE/30 was known as HD-40, my 5500/225 was Mack, my eMate is still Faux Mac (I can't actually name it, but that's what I call it), and my iMac DV/SE is The Fourth Stooge.

My grape iMac DV is a great little system, originally dubbed "poopie" (because it's purple, you see) but it's purple-ness made it the object of derision by the mean beige-loving crowd.

So to keep it from getting shaken down for it's lunch money by the other PCs, I changed it's name to "Mofo." We're thinking about getting it a tattoo.

To keep some consistency in the family, when we recently added a Pimso Powerbook to the household, i naturally dubbed it "PisMofo."

I call my rev B. Bondi Blue iMac -Franken-mac. I have installed a external hard drive using a very long IDE cable that goes to a external powered case. It has an external 17in monitor with is hooked up to a external monitor port and a serial port connected to an old Imagewriter. I've upgrade the graphics card with a VooDoo2 so at least I can play decent 3D games. Triple booting Linux (Yellowdog Linux, SuSE Linux and LinuxPPC), Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.1 give frankie a different persona (depends on my mood).

(Keep in mind I only own one computer at a time so I no longer own my previous machines)

My 6100/60's hard drive was named: l i v (after the lovely Liv Tyler)

My 7300/180's hard drive was named: g w y n e t h (after the lovely Gwyneth Paltrow)

My current Pismo 400's hard drive is named: s e v e n (my middle name)

My next machine, most likely a TiBook rev b will be named: i m o g e n (I always liked the name)

My LC 630 is named Knife. As in Knife the Mac.

My Pismo is named Luna, because on the night I bought it there was a full moon. When I got OS X on a partition, I called that partition Helios. Sun and moon sit on my desktop. Goes really well with the OS X space theme screensaver.

Hmmm... never bothered to name mine. Never had one long enough to get attached to it.

In our house it's just called The Computer.

"What are you doing on The Computer?"
"I'm on The Computer"
"He's playing with The Computer."

yeah, real clever.

I guess the Lounge wasn't around back then... hehe.

I can't find my post here and I've since gotten new computers, so:

My G4 Sawtooth is Crunch, one 5500 is Sig. The Classic II is Mac.

I already have a name for my next computer, but that will be given when I get it.

I've not been naming them, but now I've run into a problem. I have a total of three systems on my LAN: two Macs and an Alpha. For name service, I need to name the things. I figure I can go Alpha (for the Alpha), Bravo, and Charlie, but that seems kinda boring. I haven't decided yet.

Naming them by description only works if they never travel and they're sufficiently different. Since one of them is a Powerbook, that idea doesn't work. And two are G3-based.

The problem isn't really naming them, as there are tons of naming series out there. The problem is remembering which is which.

And I can't call them each "Eric", notwithstanding the British, though that would be easy to remember.

Half-a-bee, philisophicly,
must ipso facto
half not-be

Anyway...

Yeah, there's Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Etc., which is kinda boring.
Names of Hobbits is way cliche
Planets might work, I guess
Stars would work if these were Sun boxes, but they're not.

Hm. Nothing says I have to be sequential about this. How about Alpha, Whiskey, and X-Ray (for the PB). Gonna have to label the things...

Spices? (Salt, Pepper, Oregano?)
Fruits? (Orange, Grape, Cherry? can't use Lemon or Apple)
can't use kinds of apple.
Randomness? (alskjf, wejfwi, akweji... would really have to label the things!)
Critters? (bear, wolf, cougar ...yuck)
Chemicals? (Hydrogen, Carbon, Nitrogen... or LSD, Pot, Coke, for that matter)
Numbers is even more boring than phonetic letters.

Hm... what other catagories.... foods? Authors? Power sources? proper nouns? Colors, containers, geologic ages, musicians, continents (Reunite Gondwanaland!!), oh!

Yes. Name them from the following series:

Amy, Basil, Clara, Desmond, Ernest, Fanny, George, Hector, Ida, James, Kate, Leo, Maud, Neville, Olive, Prue, Quentin, Rhoda, Susan, Titus, Una, Victor, Winnie, Xerxes, Yorick, Zillah ... now, points for knowing where that came from. I've long wanted to teach a child his alphabet that way, to scare his teacher.

The G4 Cube at my workplace is (rather unoriginally) called "Borg Ship".

At the moment I'm not sure what to name my new G4/533DP. I've called my computers "Tiberius" or "Thelonius" in the past, but am looking for new ideas.

I call My G3/266 Desktop "My Mac" since it's my only computer. If I had more than one Mac I'd likely call it "My G3/266 Desktop".

I tend to not dub names to inanimate objects

My Partitions/Drives are named as follows

"To CD-R"
"To CD-RW"
"Mac OS 9.1"
"Mac OSX v10.0"

Yep pretty self explanatory and unimaginitive

Mike

Lets see..

The G4 500DP is Star Command with a System partition of XR, Apps partition of Lightyear and second drive Marvin. With a VPC virtual machine named Zurg.

The Airport base station supplies The Matrix to a Wallstreet 266 named Dogbert.

My son's Bondi IMac is Alpha One and it runs a VPC vm named Ranger Nova for evil windows only kiddie stuff (Tonka 3D trucks rock!)

The PowerCenter 132 now relegated to deep storage was George with the original Marvin as the HD and shares shelf space with a still operable PB540c that was my original Dogbert

Although I thought MI2 was pretty cool, the genesis of my computer names was mythology. Bellerophon was originally my PowerBook's name but now that I have a desktop and use it more I feel like it slew the PowerBook. I still love my beloved Wallstreet PowerBook and use it regularly so it needed a name for filesharing. Chimaera just seemed logical. My Comet goes with me whenever I travel so I can keep up with email. Something out of Homer's Odyssey seemed apropriate, but I didn't want something too obvious. More of a minor character. Aenaes feld his city, and it just fit with the traveling thing. I considered characters from Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead, but the names were not compelling enough.

My desktop was aptly name jwardell.syr.edu, and now jwardell.myftp.org.
My powerbook, named to reflect its properties, and confuse PC users that don't know characters they can't type, is called w?? (I wonder if that will even show in the forums).
My hard drives/partitions have always been named after MacOS system codenames. The first being Copland when I tried running an early version of it!

So, I used to call my SE "TimoSE", and then I got really creative with my old 7100/80, calling it "Timo fat pizzabox".

But now I need a good name for my Pismo, besides TimoPismo. So far, it's just "Pismo" as in "I luv my Pismo."
