I'm amazed with iTunes. Sure, it takes up 18% of my CPU when playing a song while mpg123 only uses 3%; but the management capabilities are incredible. My brother borrowed my iBook to make some CDs with it; in the process he had ripped quite a few tracks to the default iTunes storage place (~/Documnets/iTunes). Some of those tracks were from CDs that I own, so I moved the files over to /Volumes/Music, which is where I like to keep all the music files. Well, I had some playlists that I was going to burn to mp3cd and many of the songs had the ? icon next to them because the files had been moved. It would have been a pain to manually "Locate This Song" for each and every one of them, so I just re-imported /Volumes/Music into my Library and all the songs were updated. Then, upon double-clicking on the broken links in my playlist, iTunes matched the song information and realized that the new file location was the same song and fixed everything. That's quality engineering; I would try the same thing out with Windows Media Player under Windows if I still had a Windows box to perform such an experiment -- I suspect that it would make you go out and find all the files manually.

You know I should probably try running my computer without iTunes on some times. See how much faster it works

Ink: mpg123 only uses 3% on your computer? On my Pismo, it hardly ever goes below 8% ... iTunes uses 25-30%! I've just reinstalled Mac OS X, and am now running 10.1.4 (10.1 developer tools installed).

But you're right - iTunes is great. I bought a PC last year, and I have yet to find such a program for it... I'm using WinAMP, and I hate it! Windows Media Player is no good either.

The best feature of iTunes is its price. I read somewhere that the value of an item is equal to how useful it is to you, divided by its price. In the case of iTunes, the value is undefined.

I like iTunes. It isn't perfect but it makes managing mp3s a breeze.

And then attributes everything wrong with iTunes to Bush and 9/11.

The real trick to iTunes is to stop running top all the time and go back to actually using your Mac.

Amen!!
I do all my web/graphics work sometimes with Phosothop 7, GoLive 6, and Illustrator 10 open and always using iTunes without problems in mi Pismo.
I wouldn't trade iTunes for any other player...and i've used quite a bit.
