I'm getting the same. Anyone have any clue what's going on? I've tried both POP and IMAP, and neither work.

Wonderful, auto responce doesn't work either and there are no bounce messages. Just wonderful, i'm within the last 12 hours of the auction so I can't add to the description to say email at another account...

Same here, but this isn't the first time this sorta thing has happened to me. Seems like a couple of months ago it did this, but in a few hours it was back up. Probably just routine maintenance.

Yeah, good to know it's not just me.

Entourage X checks mail every twenty minutes; the error log says it's been down since 5:00 AM.

yes it's down for me... mail.mac.com rejects my password, smtp.mac.com & iTools accepts it OK.

But strangely it does not affect all accounts, it's ok for some account (check with my other pals)...

Same here, not a single mail
Perhaps no one wrote me, or my mails got lost in limbo

It's working now, but all of the 176 messages I had in my inbox are gone. Any ideas on what happened to my messages, and if there is anyway of getting them back. I'm using MacOS X Mail app.

I'm having this same problem, just to get a broader scope.

Mail.app, 10.1.3, went down this morning and came back up when I got back from work early this afternoon, but ALL of my messages are gone.
And I was building up quite a hefty and IMPORTANT archive here...

grrrrrrr......

On a lighter note, don't suppose anyone stole Apple's mail servers, do you?

Your messages are stored on the server, though Mail.app stores your messages locally, it checks if they are still on the server, and if not, it deletes the local file, in an attempt to synch with a server.. Hmm.. that's a long run on sentence Entourage, however does not try to synch with the server, and always keeps local backups. Anyways, I've been told that Apple has, in an attempt to alleviate the problem simply resent all of the e-mails back to their respective owners.

I'm sorry, but this is why mac.com (IMAP specifically) SUCKS A$$. I'm sick of this flaky IMAP crap. My wife lost her WHOLE inbox. I've converted her and my accounts to POP. When I download mail, I want it to STAY downloaded. Criminy.

related note: anyone not been able to SEND anything? I've been receiving mail, okay, but now my inbox is gone, and nothing has gone OUT from my account in like 2 weeks! I wouldn't have noticed, except someone was using my comp to program, and tying to email the files back to hers... this is much frustrating!

I swung by the iTools board over at Apple Discussions and found these postings:

Mar 10, 02 10:46 a.m. CST

We are aware of an issue which is currently affecting approximately 20% of mac.com email users. Customers who are experiencing this issue will receive authentication errors when trying to check their mac.com email via POP or IMAP. This issue began around 1:45 AM this morning. We are working towards a resolution and estimate that we will reach one at about 9:30 AM PST today.

I apologize far any inconvenience that this may have caused and want to assure you that we are working hard to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

The issue where some mac.com email users were receiving authentication errors when trying to check their mac.com email have been resolved. All new messages should now be received normally.

Some users may be experiencing an issue where their previously stored email is not available. We are working on recovering all subfolders and messages. The recovery process may take up to 24 hours. Please be assured that no mail will be lost.

I will post back to this forum as additional information becomes available. Thank you for your continued patience in this matter.

Also, this was posted on the main iTools discussion page:

Alert! - At approximately 4:00 PM PST 3/10/02 we will be performing maintenance and repairs on on one of our email servers. The servicing of this server is expected to be completed by approximately 5:00 AM PST 3/11/02. During this time period approximately 20% of mac.com users will be unable to access their mac.com email.

Or was it impossible to send mail while there were problems?
