Hello all.

Due to Quark 5 and Photoshop 7 being released for OSX I have been seriously considering switching over.....mostly just for the sake of keeping current, personally classic runs great for me....anyways...

I have a Umax Astra 2100U scanner (USB) and I remember a while back hearing that Umax will not make drivers for OSX.

What I wanna know is that has anybody heard otherwise? Or possibly know a workaround for this? If I can't get my scanner working in X then I'll have to stay in 9 indefinetely till I gather enough scratch for a an X-savvy scanner.....or I die of old-age.

Any insight is welcomed.

Sek, Quark 5 is a Classic-only app. You'll have to wait for version 5.5 for a Carbonized QuarkXPress.

Anyway, all we've heard from Umax is that Mac OS X drivers are in development. No word on which products will be supported and when drivers will be released.

Quark and my Umax Astra 2010U both work fine in Classic, so I'm really not complaining. Since I'm am able to create an entire newspaper and website from OSX (thanks to the magic of Classic), I'm pretty happy. Really, I don't see many printers going to OS X for quite some time. I would like to see OS X drivers for my scanner, but I still have to work in classic when it comes to real work.

Now that Photoshop is going X, I suppose there will be more pressure on third party hardware makers. However, until the commercial people upgrade (which depends a lot on customers and support for their hardware) I don't expect the manufacturers to invest that much capital in OS X drivers. Printers often have equipment that costs tens of thousands of dollars, and they certainly aren't going to upgrade to a system that doesn't support their equipment.

I suppose the rest of us just have to be patient.

Cheers!

I have a 2100U and it works fine in Classic. Actually better, because while it is scanning in 9 I can't do anything else, but in X I can jump to other programs.

If you have a problem with the scanner not being seen by Classic, reboot to 9 and scan something. Then jump back to X. That seems to fix it. (I think I've only had this problem after upgrading the Umax software, but I could be mistaken. I don't scan a lot.)
