iChat is great but I'm having so many problems... main annoyance is file transfer. it doesn't seem to work. Do I need to open certain ports on my router?

Did you turn on 10.2's Firewall?
If so there's a pre-set AOL IM port (5190) you can allow. Try allowing the same port on you router.
