Hello,

soon Ill be getting a dual G4 gz. I plan on gettng a 2d HD for backup. Im looking at the WesternDigital 80GB caviar.

it might be faster than the HD that comes with it as it has a 8MB buffer.

the apple 'docs' say that max bandwith is to put the second HD on the other bus: one on the ata100, one on the ata66. if this is so, would the 'fastest' system for me be to put the original 80MB HD ( for back-up, once a week or so) on the ata-66, and the 'caviar' on the ata-100, after a few days of formating, etc???

thanks so much rotut

IMHO, if speed is your primary concern, don't buy a Western Digital.

In my experience, they're decidedly middle-of-the-road when it comes to speed. Whether or not its faster than the stock drive that Apple ships, I don't know, but a Seagate Barracuda would be a better bet.

Then, of course, there's always always SCSI if you really want speed.

That's usually my opinion - but the WD with the 8 meg cache is VERY fast...

Camelo, Cipher, et al,
thanks for your commnets. The seagate barracuda is the same price as the WD caviar. it says its very quite although I hear (hee hee) the G4 fan is load.

does the 2MB buffer on the barracuda mean something if the WD has 8? Ive no idea but the barracuda does **sound** good.

thanks for the tip.

What advantage does having the 8 meg buffer have, compared to the usual 2 meg buffer ?

Is it faster in copying large files, or is it generally faster regardless of what kind of stuff you're doing with the drive ?
