1 gig of Kingmax RAM arrived from newegg today. Installed in 5 minutes, booted up just fine, logged in fine. Launched a slew of apps and hit my Quicksilver activation key combo, seemed snappy.
Cross your fingers, I hate dealing with RMAs...

Don't buy Kingmax.

Before this, Firefox crashed three times loading trivial webpages, Safari crashed, and six applications refused to leave the dock after being quit (a restart fixed that). This is a fresh install of OS X with no other known problems with the machine. 1.25 GHz Powerbook Aluminum 15". Looks like I'll be calling newegg to see what I can do about this. I'm afraid the RAM is not bad, it just doesn't like my machine.
Good luck. hah.

I just called Outpost on the 1 gig stick of Kingston PC2700 and they said they are expecting a shipment on March 7th.
That's this stuff, by the way: http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4312615
Currently $214 with a $20 mail in rebate.

I don't know what the deal was with the Kingmax for me, but I returned it. I probably should have done more testing, but I was pissed off.

You should have called and demanded a replacement free of charge. I'm sure they would have listenend.

hi,
i found a 1gb samsung ram stick for $235 at 18004memory.com, which seems like a good price, but i'd have to pay sales tax on it since i live in new york (in addition to shipping).
anyone know where i could buy a 1gb samsung ram stick online for a comparable price without having to pay the sales tax?
thanks!
ps i have a 15 inch powerbook 1.67ghz
pps i think i'd like to stick with samsung, since apple uses it and therefore it's reliable (right?)

I will be forever scarred from this bad experience with cheap RAM. While I'd like to be able to afford Crucial RAM, that's really not an option right now. I should have done more testing on the Kingmax RAM, but it was getting to be a pain in the butt to keep lugging my laptop to campus to use the tools in the shop where I work (I couldn't find anything small enough at my house to remove the memory access plate). Lazy, I know.
Oh well, I'll probably end up getting a stick of Samsung RAM from 18004memory. I had been looking at the same chip of Samsung stuff over at Other World Computing for around $15 more.

Added a 1GB RAM from NewEgg over a week now. It works great. Running Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Flash at the same time and the machine still feels snappy.

I agree. I don't know enough about the hardware to know if "quality" RAM makes a difference. I will end up buying the 18004memory.com Samsung RAM too. Now if that one fails too, then I might have it in me to try generic-branded RAM again. I've tasted the extra gig of RAM and it's sweet, so I'm determined to get more in there.
I set up a new 1.67 GHz 15" Powerbook with a gig of RAM for a user today. That machine is fast, I'll tell you that.

I just received the Kinggmax 1 gb for $180 from NewEgg.. so far so good. I am running memtest on it right now.
What else can I use to make sure it's good memory? Any other good tips for taxing the memory to make sure it's good??

Don't pull the trigger just yet. When I was trying to find the link for you I just noticed that it doesn't say "Samsung" anywhere on the page detailing RAM for my machine. I must have gotten caught up jaquarat saying earlier that the 18004memory.com RAM was Samsung stuff.
What the heck, what's $50 in the long run? I just want some extra RAM, man!

Ewiz got pretty good ratings at resellerratings.com and samsung has lifetime warranty on their ram so I think it should be fine. I ordered today. Will report bac k when I get it early next week.

Let us know how the eWiz.com Samsung memory works out.
I found a place called MaxUpgrades.com that sells memory specifically for the PowerBook series... they have a 1GB SODIMM for my 1.5ghz 12" ALbook for $199... but they don't specify the brand. Has anyone ordered memory from these guys before?
Here's a link to the memory:

You were lucky with the kingmax - or I was unlucky, but I had 2 of those and they both caused constant kernel panics....it seems many people had not problem though.

Went to Fry's today and bought a 1gb stick that was a Generic brand and it is working very well. I paid $199 for it. No problems to report, and Powerbook running much smoother now.

My RAM has been in town for 2 days now, but I won't get it until tomorrow when I go into work. Benefit of having it delivered to work is that I'm always there (or at class on the same campus). Sucky part is getting an e-mail at 4:59 PM on a Friday afternoon saying that the package had been signed for at the university's shipping and receiving department.
I hope this expensive generic RAM is better than that cheap Kingmax. I want this to be over, and I'm jealous of all you guys that found Samsung RAM for under $200.

FWIW I've been very happy with my 2x1GB Fry's DIMMs. Works beautifully. Only $159/each, too.
This is on a 1.5GHz 15" PB.

If you have a 12" Aluminum that sucker's soldered on, larger Powerbooks simply have two user accessible slots under the RAM access plate (next to the battery on the bottom of the machine). Bummer!

Just ordered the Samsung 1G module from ewiz.com mentioned above for $185 plus $8 shipping U.S. It's the exact same model Apples uses for upgrades and that OWC sells for $245. Personally I'd rather go with something tested by Apple than take a chance on Kingmax, especially after some here have had problems.
The catch with ewiz may be that there's no warranty beyond ewiz's 7 day-refund/1 year-repair policy (I couldn't find one anyway). But as someone mentioned earlier, RAM generally works or it doesn't. You should know right away if there are any problems with your module.

ordered a 1G Samsung stick from Data Memory Systems on Feb.26 for $252 including shipping. received it a couple days ago, installed it last night and now i'm cruising like a well oiled machine. no issues, panics, shutdowns or force quits yet.
went the cheap ram route earlier last year and wasn't surprised when it didn't work and had to return it. after doing plenty of research and poking around i decided to go with ram that is a bit more stable. i'm certainly glad i did.

I ordered from ewiz on Friday and to my surprise fedex tried to deliver on Monday. I had requested 2nd day fedex. I wasn't home and finally got the memory today. Popped it in and everything is working so far, after about five hours of use. I'll report back if I have any problems later, but I probably won't given that it's samsung memory.
All in all a great experience with ewiz and great price too! recommended!
btw, I think samsung memory always has lifetime warranty and I doubt that it's less from ewiz...but I don't really know how these things work in case there's a problem.

I had ordered my 1G Samsung stick from ewiz.com yesterday March 8, 2005 at 1.30 PM and it arrived today around 11.00 AM (March 9, 2005). Wow...
I paid 207.71 (185.40+15.30tax+7.01shipping).
I just installed it and it had worked beautifully so far (5 hours). I will report back.
PS. I live in San Francisco and I think ewiz is located in San Jose. That is why it got here so fast.
