My only regret is downsizing to an iPad Mini. It's great for portability's sake, but I do miss that screen real estate, especially in apps like Paper by 53.

I went ahead and purchased it as well. The more I thought about it after I posted here, the more I thought about the screen shattering and my $700 watch being ruined.

That's great - I hope you like the watch, and now you have a piece of mind too.

Of course AppleCare covers more than physical damage but I was just wondering. You mention $700+ dollars so am I correct in presuming you went with the Apple Watch Edition model? If so, that thing has a sapphire screen does it not? It should be virtually indestructible.

Not "Edition". Just "Watch" - the stainless steel ones come around that price point (42mm Milanese or leather band).
Sapphire is more scratch-resistant, but it *will* shatter with enough effort.

Yeah that's what I meant. The stainless steel one. Well if they can shatter then that's a different ball of wax.

Looking at various online stress tests of both screens leads me to believe that the watch is pretty dang tough.

I got a 42MM Stainless with the classic leather buckle. (ordered a sport band as well but apparently they are taking forever to ship)
Sapphire is extremely scratch resistant compared to the Ion X glass BUT because sapphire is so hard it's more brittle therefore prone to shattering if dropped.

Sample size of 6? You seem confused. It's more like 6 (that I know of) out of, say, ~100 people.

My wife loves hers, I'm not sure she's taken it off, except to bathe. It is a gorgeous thing (and a lot tinier (38mm) than I thought it would be). Mine was DOA, wouldn't even turn on, so I sent it back and should have another by tomorrow.

Looks nice, I do miss having a SD slot - why the hell won't Apple include this???? I hate having to rely on cloud services.

Because it's not even yesterday's technology, it's last week's technology. It would be a completely pointless addition.

I couldn't disagree more, perhaps pointless for you. In my case: HD footage from Digital cameras, for one. cheap and quick storage for two - no ****ing cloud required!
btw a new SD card from SanDisk does 280MB/s and can directly record 4K video.

So exactly how in the hell is no extra storage, or even cloud storage, better than microSD and unlimited on-device storage? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

If you've been on an Apple forum for so long and still seriously asking how fewer features can be better than more features, then there really isn't any point in arguing with you.

I had to remove the last of my HD movies from my iPhone 6+ because I was running out of room. Nope, screw that. I want an SD card option.

Not suitable, it's for iPhoto use or importing but not mass storage.
Apple doesn't want users accessing the file system.

Apple don't offer tools for accessing a file system. They would have to in order to add mass storage. They don't want to, as this is part of why both iOS and OS X exist.
It's 2015. The reasons are the same they were in 2007.

More storage is better than less storage, there's no way to spin that, man.

What? Apple isn't going to change direction, not at this point, but that doesn't mean they were right in the first place.

An iPad isn't an external hard drive. If you need one of those, there are plenty of options. Many even work with an iPad.

So? Then you're wasting your space, maybe you should have bought a 64GB phone instead? Sometimes I need more than 128GB of external storage while on the go, so I swap cards.

It just unfortunate that Apple doesn't make a more flexible device (which leaves the door open for Android). Oh well.

Cut the hyperbole, geez... They're needlessly letting sales go over to Android is what they're doing. All so they can make the phone thinner (it's too thin already) and cheaper to manufacture.

Thinner phones sell better, and cheaper manufacturing means higher profits.
They're not crying over those lost sales.
Although, who knows: they've started making idiot slabs to take on the Android Hugephone market, so maybe they'll start doing tacky little slots with fiddly little plastic covers to take on the part of the market still stuck in the 90s.

So, on the watch front: wifey is reporting about 20% battery life at the end of the day, maybe from around 7am to 9pm. Has yet to see the fabled Reserve Battery.
Her complaints now:
1) poor battery life and the need to charge it everyday. (but we knew this before it even came out, so no news here.)
2) texting with Message and Line needs a lot of work - she's a master texter, it's in her blood. She thinks it's not practical to repeat the same tired responses. As a recipient, I agree. Don't know how to improve this, but it sure needs it.

Obviously stuck in the 90s (not):
When fanboys care more about form, especially at the expense of function, you begin to realize that they've been drinking too much of the kool-aid.

Not really, but I suppose after a week or so it becomes an obvious issue if you're working long hours.
But as I said, she's yet seen reserve power, so it's fine.

I don't see the problem.
Which apps read the card? Do you have to point your Music app to the card vs. internal storage? Video app? Camera app?
Adding an SD card means fiddling is required, and Apple is staunchly anti-fiddling.

Usage report:
In a funny way, the watch works best when you ignore it. The haptic notifications are excellent - I've switched all audio notifications off and reduced haptic notifications to messages, phone ringing and upcoming appointments. I don't need to be told every time an email arrives. I don't try to read email on it, read twitter on it, check Instagram on it. There are much better options for that, i.e bigger screens.
Battery life is better than expected. I'm left with 40% at the end of the day, starting with a full charge - I get up at 6:00 and (typically) go to bed around 11:00.
The Milanese loop is beautiful, closes securely, really well made.
Messages - I am finding myself talking to my wrist a lot, which does make me feel a little silly. BUT, the voice recognition is top notch and very fast. If it's a one line response, I often used canned, otherwise I dictate.
Siri - I never much used Siri before, but with the watch it has become my main interface. Raise watch, say "hello Siri, call...." works really well. I am using this to start calls, open apps, send messages, even for emails.
The "call close friends" button is weird. It's a single use button, the watch has more elegant ways to achieve the same result. If a hardware solution was really needed, perhaps a double-tap on the crown could have handled the same thing. It feels like a solution in search of a problem. Very un-Apple.
Third party apps I am using: Evernote and Slack. Evernote to store quick thoughts and ideas (I've been using Evernote since launch for this kind of thing), Slack is our at-work-messaging app.
Notifications - there are some weird UI inconsistencies at work. Glances does the job the dock does on the desktop, not sure how well that works though.
