Interview with the vampire had a sequel in Queen of the Damned in 2002, without any of the actors from the original and only one character (Lestat, Cruise's character). Don't take that as an invitation to watch it, though.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

That was based on books and was a series. But considering it started in 1960, you have a point.

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, although the titles already have that "Franchise: Subtitle" symmetry going on.

The second seemed to have some OTT Duneesque production design the first lacked.
Dune is not a movie you should go see unless you can cope with limitless wasted potential.

We saw Dune at the theater when it was released, my dad's a big Frank Herbert fan, and I can't say he was very happy when we left.

There's a three-part TV remake from about six years or so ago that I really liked. The SFX are overdone, but that's part of the whole style, and it actually works quite well. It's very true to the book.

I tried, but both Chronicles and Riddick left me feeling like I wasted my time at the expense of watching almost anything else. I had high hopes that Riddick would learn from the many failures of Chronicles, but they just made other mistakes instead in my opinion.
Ahhhh well, Pitch Black is just another attempted series enjoyed best on its own. Nothing wrong with that.

I actually liked David Lynch's Dune, never saw the tv series. Books were very good, but the prequels written by his son and somebody else were tripe.

But the thing is, Pitch Black and Chronicles are two completely different genres. They shouldn't be compared, except that the same character is both movies.
I have no interest in Pitch Black, because that genre can suck it.

Have you seen Chronicles?
The complaint I heard about Riddick was it was a mish-mash of Pitch Black and Riddick. Since no one really cares for the former, it was a bit of a flop.

I haven't seen any of them.
I saw two minutes of Chronicles, and loved the production design.
I unfortunately (in terms of entertainment options) have a nasty case of restless leg syndrome. It's pretty much stopped me from watching movies or playing video games.
That's why all my movie recommendations are from last century.

I began coping with the problem by avoiding things wherein I need to sit down. I used to watch tons of movies. Now I rate one or two a year.
Last movie I saw was Prometheus.

Get outta here. Let me propose two genres for you: "Good Movie" and "Bad Movie". Pitch Black is the former. You get where I'm going with the latter....
Alien and Aliens are sequels that have to be put in separate genres. Aliens is a straight-up action movie in space, whereas Alien is definitely not an action movie at all - from a genre perspective they're simply not similar. But both are still good (great) movies....

Confused. I assume you meant latter, here? Because as far as I'm aware, Pitch Black is very well-known as an underrated cult classic, whereas Riddick (and Chronicles) are well-known in the sense that everyone not on your couch consider them to be overblown, overdone and either thoroughly mediocre or outright bad.
But I do think you`re right if you were saying that Riddick was a poor mishmash of Pitch Black and Chronicles.

All these lovers and haters of Pitch Black... is, in fact, the biology wonky?
Isn't the premise the planet only rarely goes dark? And then all these gribblies come out?
How do the gribblies survive during the light part?

I don't know about "lovers and haters"....it's just a good/solid movie that was obviously made on a very small budget. It's very...satisfying.
I don't remember exactly, but the premise is the planet has multiple moons and is therefore usually daylight. The monsters are sun-o-phobic and permanently live underground or in available shelters that afford protection. The humans happened to land at the rare time when there is a total eclipse and everything goes pitch black, allowing the baddies to briefly roam the entire planet.
As to the biology...I mean...it's a science fiction movie. The dark protagonist is some sort of mutant who is super-strong/fast and can see in the dark. If you're looking for biology, watch Discovery.

I watched it at 3am on an airplane, is that the same thing? And to totally embarrass myself, I tried watching Paranormal Activity at 3am on an airplane once and couldn't finish it because it freaked me out.

Conversely (and this is why I think they are such a great pairing), Aliens would be awesome to watch on an airplane or sub at 3am. It would be a rockin great time.
I would 100% fall asleep trying to watch Alien at 3am. It's an incredible film but slow and atmospheric enough to knock me out past 10pm.

It wasn't the movie that was the real problem, it was the clawing through the berthing (sleeping) areas afterwards with all the subhuman noises in the freaking dark that was.

All is Lost was good, but I don't think I would watch it again. There just wasn't anything in the way of character arc that made you really feel for him, other than his terrible luck. Worth watching though, as you say, very intense...although if you actually know the ocean and what a storm is like, having it likely all or mostly filmed in a tank (from what I could tell) is a bit obvious.

I found the lack of dialogue unnerving, and kept talking to myself/him throughout. Several times I wished he had a tiger to talk to. If this were a more typical hollywood movie, they would have had a prologue with his family, showing some estrangement... blah blah. It actually felt nice not having that trope, cleaner, just some moments where you get glimpses of his life.

Soft sci-fi is fine if has narrative justification, it's not fine when it's an excuse to be lazy.
At least in my book. I'm into sciencey stuff.

I'm not a big fan of Chronicles.., it's mediocre, at best. It's Emo Riddick, and I don't really like Emo Riddick. I'm more a fan of calculating, vicious, nasty, psycho-with-a-heart-of-something-that's-almost-like-gold Riddick. Rating them 1 to 10, I'd say; First = 8+, Second = 5, Third = 6.5ish. We're getting a fourth too, Last Son of Furya or something like that.

Hey, I've got a science degree, in biology natch. But you seem to be taking "science fiction" waaaay too seriously. By your own criteria pretty much all fiction action movies are...invalidated?

If science fiction is portraying things modern science has already discovered (sound in space, gravity, viruses) then they lose plausibility if they mess that up. However, I have no problem with things like dematerialization, or time travel, because there are no rules for the impossible, until the writers make them. As long as they can be consistent to the rules they set, it's cool.

Yeah. I'm generally fine with "superscience".
Likewise, Star Wars is marshmallow soft, but it's just as much a fairy tale as sci-fi, so that doesn't bother me. The soft aspects have narrative justification.
I'm not even necessarily rigid about it with harder sci-fi. It's a question of whether the choice has narrative support or is laziness.
Take Prometheus. There was a lot of implausible shit going on in the first half. Things which in real life would be suicidal. As I thought about it though, I realized there's a pretty hefty time constraint in the length of a normal movie, and representing the slow and deliberate way you would actually go about things in real life would be a big load on that limited time.
Unfortunately, it was at that exact moment, where I understood what they were serving up, and was ready to roll with it, when the movie flung itself off the ****ing cliff.
I think an excellent example of properly working the angles of science vs. fantasy was in Hancock. Right at the beginning, Hancock stops a freight train to save some people's lives. What follows is funny (everybody starts yelling at him for doing it in a stupid way), but throughout the whole two or three minute scene I'm twitching, because even though it's a movie where people fly and shit, I understand basic principles of momentum, and that stopping the first car of a freight train on a dime does nothing about all the cars behind it.
As the scene ends, I'm grumbling to myself, "oh... so it's going to be one of those movies".
Then it does something brilliant. As the camera cranes out, you see the rest of the train is still accordioning itself. Cars being thrown off the rails left and right.
Sold!

Just to be "that guy" when it comes to superhero tropes...
Super strong superhero tries to pick up a tank.
The result would be planting themselves in the ground like a tent peg.

IMO that's a weird and arbitrary line to draw, mostly because "impossible ecosystems" is the only one we aren't certain of. It bugs you that the author has created a world you're not aware exists in the universe, but a hero flying a car off a bridge and then down the street is totally fine because it's done for entertainment/effect?
Look, I've just realized that you haven't even watched the movie. Why don't you try that first?
