You are about to get sued by the RIAA for "excessive backing-up of copyright-protected works." They must leave no stone unturned in their battle to root out every customer, you know.
But yeah, if you don't have it twice, you don't have it.

Mine is on my main drive, my backup drive (both in the same tower) burned to CD, on my iPod, and on my work machine. Maybe I should put a backup on 128 mb magneto-optical disks into orbit, just in case.

Apple told me to back it up. They even have it as part of the OS. It's called "time machine". And they also outline on their website how to back up to CD-R or DVD-R.
You didn't take me seriously did you?!?! Please please please tell me you didn't.

That doesn't mean it makes the RIAA happy.

Hmmm.... maybe the RIAA could sue Apple for making software that makes backing up copyright-protected files possible... I hope their lawyers are on that! You see, it should work like it did with vinyl. If you scratched an album, you had to buy it again. (until home taping killed music, that is)

There was a thread here, I think, recently (maybe metafilter -- I forget) in which someone posted some quotes by a RIAA lawyer who refused to admit that it was actually legal to even rip a CD that you bought to your computer to begin with. Not that they were actually thinking of prosecuting anyone for ripping CDs, (yet) but that it was, you know, "against the rules." Those are some wacked out lawyers over there at the RIAA, is all I'm saying.

Good to have another Sigur Ros fan in the forums.

My wife and friends all absolutely hate them, so I usually have to enjoy it in solitude.

I tried to draw him out earlier in the thread, but NUTHIN'!

No bite.

Back on topic: I found my Mute Math CDs, so I'm adding them back to the playlist. This thread has inspired me to spend a large chunk of this evening re-ripping CDs.

True, though I wonder how much the gay traffic light buttons are to blame, rather than a preference to color itself. If only Apple took a cue from Max Rudberg.

Yeah, I lost my perspective with how overplayed it is. But I wouldn't consider it Top 5 from that album.

I do kind of like it, but that is one of those songs that is down to my son. He heard it in the movie "The Wild," and had overplayed it ever since. I got him turned on to the only other Coldplay song I had for a bit of variety.

I use the default theme (no modding or changing of preferences at all), and I see no traffic light buttons anywhere..?

Oh, hang on, I get it now—you were talking about the three little ‘close/minimize/optimize size’ window buttons? I don’t even notice those, never really thought of them as traffic lights. But at least I’m on the same page as everyone else now.

Didn't you know? Traffic lights like to have sex with other traffic lights of the same gender! Shocking, and newsworthy! Well, almost as newsworthy as celebrities who have sex with people of the same gender.
Speaking of, one of the free subway papers here had (on the front page, too!) an extremely important article a few days ago, about how some actor on some TV show called DeGrassi (I think? It’s not even aired here) had just come out in an interview.

Stop the presses, indeed.

Yeah, I'm not sure where I heard the term used first (I imagine these forums) but it definitely stuck with me. I just don't like the color combination, especially in comparison to this:

I keep the default preferences as well. It helps me instruct people what to click on when I get the unOfficial tech support calls here. Seems I am the conductor of a Mac help desk. Since I convinced a number of people to switch, they feel free to call for help desk support. Saying "clicking the red dot on your application window does not quit the application" is a lot easier than saying "clicking the 'close window' button does not quit the application".

Most non-geeks tend to keep their Macs in the default preferences. And whenever I change my preferences I forget what the defaults are.

Certainly not the worst list I've seen. But Final Fantasy's version of Your Ex-lover is Dead trumps the original.

when you say graphite, I assume you are referring to picking between "Blue" and "graphite" in the Appearance panel of system preferences. the two pictures you posted are just different versions of iTunes and don't have anything to do with the rest of the system.

iTunes respects the choice in the Appearance panel. When you select Blue, the check boxes are blue. When you select Graphite, they're gray.

I don't know why you continue this. you're wrong. I am using "Blue" not graphite, as are most of those people. do you have Leopard or even the latest versions of iTunes? changing between Blue and Graphite in Leopard does nothing to change the check boxes.

I just tested this and you're right. Weird. Now that I think about it, it was probably part of the iTunes 7 update. FWIW, the checkboxes in the iTunes preferences still change as always. I wish they hadn't turned it off for iTunes.

iTunes respects the choice in the Appearance panel. When you select Blue, the check boxes are blue. When you select Graphite, they're gray.
No. The latest version(s?) of iTunes has the darker-blue checkboxes (they’re not grey), not the lighter ones.

Full-app screenshot for clarity (apologies for the hugeness):

Edit: Apparently I’m too slow at doing screenshots and uploading them.

I like Coldplay...
IMO, Coldplay is a very good band, but one that is ruined by being overplayed everywhere. It's a shame.

Overplaying doesn't ruin a band. How often are you in places where they play coldplay, anyway?

Well, my top 25 tracks are roughly the same, so I'll post my top 10 artists:

On an average day? Three to four times.

Overplaying doesn’t ruin a band, but it makes you tired of their music, and it makes it cool no longer to like the band.

On the average day probably about 5-6 times. Sometimes more. Our (really repetitive) stations play Clocks and Fix You at least twice a day each, The Scientist is always playing in the mall for some reason, I heard Talk passing a car today, and Clocks was playing at the gas station.

That's a "hard act to follow." How can I stay "one step ahead?"

Edit: waiddaminit -- where's the Tim Finn solo stuff??

In malls, cafés, restaurants, shops, department stores, and other public places? Easier said than done (though I’d generally love to).

He's at #19 with 978 plays. Neil's son Liam is burning up the chart with 65 plays and counting. Have you heard his solo album? It was released in the U.S. today, but I imported it last year. He's gotten some pretty good press in Rolling Stone, the Boston Globe, and other places.

I don't really leave the house without my iPod & Sennheiser's. They take care of that problem.

Heh. Fix You just came started playing in iTunes here

And—oddness. I did think I’d heard Fix You once already today. And it kept playing songs I thought I’d heard already today. Turns out it had ‘jumped back in time’, repeating the last 75 or so songs I’ve played tonight. Very strange.
