The prof had actually played with some of the big big bands, and was able to get across what "jazz" really was, along with why it's important to listen to music at the proper volume (which is "too loud for the class next door," by the way ). We listened to everything from Gregorian chants to what was on the radio right then, and it was great!
Those are the best professors. Each school has at least one of them.
