They had a HUGE technological problem. Remember OS 9 ? The Copeland disaster ? Clones ?

The only "myth" is that Microsoft bought part of Apple and thus rescued them—that comes up regularly.

It was purely a symbolic gesture: $150 million in non-voting stock (when Apple was worth 8 billion in assets), that they sold off about six months later.

The real bit of news was that Office for Mac development was guaranteed for another five years. THAT saved Apple's ass (in addition to the restructuring, product focus, and all the other stuff that Jobs pushed through).

Oh man, I forgot about Copland/Rhapsody.... Memories!

I think it's "Copland" though, as in the composer...

Wasn't there a blue box and a red box or something? Maybe a yellow box too? I need to brush up on my Mac OS history...

Yellow box was post-Rhapsody/NeXT takeover.

Rhapsody was the early project name for the first Mac ports of neXT.

Yellow Box was the environment that let you compile and run NeXT/proto-OS X software on Windows. It was shelved for strategic reasons.
