Rev D powerbook + 17 inch random LCD at 1280x1024 pixels, if the fan comes on, it's too quiet for me to notice, so meh. Temperature monitor does indicate that it heats up a little, though. Whatever, it works for me.

I know this may not be the best thread to ask, but have you found a good KVMs that supports DVI and doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I have a Rev D Powerbook hooked up to my 23 incher (Aluminun) ACD at the office and I rarely hear the fan. I do hear the fan kick on is either when I am running Keynote 2 on top of my normal apps that I have open, i.e. Mail, Entourage, Safari, Dashboard, Word and Excel (on OSX.4). I also hear the fan comes on when the Powerbook kicks into the screensaver, which is the RSS Visualizer. Other than that, I rarely hear the fan.

I've had my G4 12" Rev D PB and 20" ACD setup for about a month now and I concur with Milien, the fan rarely comes on.

@klamyfeat
----
I have my 12" PB Rev D (Tiger) hooked up to my 20" ACD and I don't hear a thing from where I'm sitting.

If I place my ear directly on to the PB surface, I do hear something running, maybe the fan? If it is the fan, it is VERY quiet. To me, there is absolutely no noise from my PB and I'm pleasently surprised. I purchased an Antec laptop stand I'm thinking about returning it because I don't think the PB is overheating or stressed one bit.

Personally, I cannot hear any noise coming from my PB. If things change, I'll let you know. I am 100% happy with my purchase.

Oh ya, the 20" ACD is beautiful. The 20" ACD really makes the 12" PB a great desktop and mobile solution.
----

I also like to buy an 12'' pb and connect it to an external display. You said that you have a Rev D with Tiger running. An important question is, if you run your displays in dual or mirror mode?

Can someone confirm that a 12'' pb runs quietly when it is connected to two displays in dual mode? Sorry, but I cannot believe that the heat problem can be resolved without changing the graphic chipset

HarldM,

I rarely run my 12" PB in dual mode because I find that the 20" ACD gives me more than enough screen room. I don't see the benefit of running in mirror mode; if I have m 20" ACD hooked up I want to stare at that and not my tiny PB screen no?

After all this time, I still don't hear the fan and I'm very pleased with having the portability of my 12" (typing away during a seminar as we speak) and the large screen at home for spreadsheets, photo editing and the such.....

@klamyfeat

Thanks for your fast reply. The thing is, that the heat problem only appears if the powerbook runs in dual-mode , because the graficcard has to do the job twice. In my opinion dual-mode is one of the key features for a 12'' notebook, and overall very practical indipendend on how big the other screen is.

I like to ask you, if you can turn both displays on in dual-mode and work a little while with it to see if Rev D of the 12'' powerbook has really changed to the good. Please use your power supply unit and energy options disabled to have a reproduceable condition.

Hm, no answer

So I guess everyone with a PB 12'' has heat problems when connecting to an external display in dual mode

I found a thread on applenome, guess since tiger the problem gets even worse, as coreimage puts even more load to the graficcard.

Harold

I just ordered a 12 inch PB primarily because I want to hook it up to a 20 inch display. I heard concerns about constant fans so I went into a store and put the 12 inch through the paces.

We hooked up the 12 inch PB to a 23 inch display using monitor spanning. Is that the same as dual display? Anyway, we could not get the fans to come on. Granted, it was only about 40 minutes of experimentation, but we had about 10 programs open with 512 MB of RAM.

Crickets. Nothing. No fan - nada. I was quite surprised.

Anyway, I pray this will be the case with my 12 inch 'Book or else I will start pining for the 15.

Yes, monitor spanning should be the same as dual display.

Great to hear! This would definately push back the alternative Thinkpad X41. Would be cool if you can test it out, when your pb arrived

I use my 12" at work sometimes with my company's DELL 2005FPW (not supposed to, but can't resist it) and I have no noise (unlike the noisy dell next to it - and I have checked that the Dell just isn't drowning out the sound by turning it off). Monitor spanning, full res on the powerbook and full res on the dell running FCE or Motion (Trial) no probs, no fans with the power settings set at highest. Lurvely

Just wish I had a display like this at home.
