Mail, iTunes, Pages. A person who has never used a Mac and never used any of these programs will immediately get that those are e-mail, music player and word processor applications. Those are great icons. What is PS in a box?

I like the new icons. They represent specialized tools that will be recognizable to folks who use them frequently. They don't need to be obnoxious, showy, and over-designed. As they are, they successfully accomplish a number of things:
1. Each app is quickly and easily identifiable by its abbreviated name, color, and the simple (yet distinctive) shape.
2. The application set maintains consistency through their color and typographical treatment.
3. They don't beat you over the head with superfluous detail and unnecessary graphical effects.
I remember when there was a distinction to be made between an icon and an illustration (or photograph), and the idea of less is more was heralded by creative types. This is as it should be.

Yes because a white square with a colored feather certainly screams PHOTOSHOP at me when i see it.
I'm quite happy with the new icons. I like the simplistic approach and that they are indeed very easy to read. If you don't like it Mac OS X makes it nice and easy for you to simply change the icon. Is this really a big deal either way? No.
It's a little upsetting there has been this much talk about a STUPID ICON on here and not the actual program itself.

But imagine if ALL icons were this way! IMAGINE, DAMN YOU!

When the CS2 box art and icons were designed, I wondered how Adobe could possibly top themselves for CS3. I see the answer now: they didn't.

Maybe Adobe just want to instill there was a chemistry between all those apps… so what could be easier than to mimic this…
Nevertheless, if you look at that old PS icon, you could think they put the cart before the horse…

The new CS3 packaging looks like it was made in 1995 using Kai's Power Tools. Here's hoping they spent more time stamping out bugs than designing the packaging!
