Background is distracting.
But for me, the primary issue is, "How did the kids take it? Did they go to sleep okay?"

Cheers for the comments Spheric. Should I try an edit the image to blur the background more ?
The kids were happy to get their clean and dry rabbits back before sleeping.

Figured I would throw a couple in here. Two images I took while on top of the Empire State Building a few years ago.
This is one looking out over NY City with a lookout station in the shot:

^Great shots.
I know how to make a splash.
More of a technical exercise really. Gotta quicken my shutter speed next time.

That looks cool. I like how yu caught the large splash then have the small one just starting and can see the red droplet still.

Just about everything else.
Though, I might try boosting the contrast a touch and cropping in a wider format. I am not a B & W fan normally, but this is quite good use of it.
I have been messing around at the local conservatory doing macros recently. This little guy is about 2-3mm across.

Perfect DOF but he could have trimmed his eyebrow before having his photo taken.
Nice.

Sorry, that's my cargo net. I should have taken it off before taking pictures.

Yup. 5 exposures, very little editing other than the initial HDR merge in Photomatix.

Very nice macro on that shot! I love seeing spider's eyes like that!
Laminar:
Other than the diagonal line, I like it...I'm a sucker for desaturated/black & white photos. Maybe a little more contrast or, possibly, a little more clarity (I love jacking the clarity up on B&W photos in Lightroom!).

Much nicer. Could use a run through the unsharp mask filter though.
First one looks like a nice snapshot. Second one looks like a composed shot.

Myself looking down at NY City:
My critique: you forgot the cardinal rule when watching over a major city. Don't forget your mask and/or cape.
A bit more seriously, that was the first relationship that came to mind from your pic's setting. And I know the movie hadn't come out yet, so it couldn't have been intended that way.
if you don't like my tampering, say the word and it will be removed.

My first photo edited using Aperture to go public. While the subject may not be everyones favourite, I'd appreciate technical criticisms (adjust white balance, exposure etc).
Change the L for XL or X2 in the link for larger pics.
Cheers.

I agree. Very nice. The only thing that bothers me is that the background changes from well-lit light grey to shadowy dark grey so abruptly. That makes a line through the image that doesn’t fit well with the other lines in the images and disturbs the eye.

How do I fix that? Add a bit of grey to that white area?

I don’t think you can fix that—it’s a composition issue, not a Photoshop issue. Had the picture been taken from a bit further down to the left, it wouldn’t have been an issue.

Nice! I know this is an utterly typical photog comment, but that picture was beautifully executed, from exposure to the perfect composition...

Lovely, all of them. I love the muffins (?), fantastic idea. The last photo makes me think miniature model macro shot, until you realise there’s a bus in there. Love it.

Number two and three are very nice. I love the stars you somehow managed to get in there in the third one (I hate trying to take pictures of stars!).
The mariachi ones, however, seem cold and lifeless to me. There’s no vibrancy, no feeling of music and movement like you’d expect a mariachi band to have. Not my taste.

Thank you, Oisín. The bus shot just makes me think of Lost every time.
mr. burns, I tend to agree with Oisín about the first three shots. The second and third have a certain pop to them that the first one, albeit good, doesn't have. The third one is particularly beautiful. It had a really interesting angle, contrast, and vividness to it.
The mariachi shots are all composed very well, and are pretty good pictures. Their only downfall is that the backdrop didn't lend itself to interesting pictures, and that's not your fault at all. For what you had to work with, I think you did a really good job. I think the first and fourth pictures from that group were the best.

My latest of mini-me. I am currently in a house that gets very little good natural light, so I played around with the umbrella/strobe until I found some artificial lighting that felt very natural. Any thoughts? I know that the background is a bit busy in some of these- I was actually shooting with a white backdrop, and the subject was not being too cooperative (i.e.- crying ). So, just as I take down the backdrop, he suddenly starts hamming it up, and I was able to get some shots in a less.. er.. sterile setting
1. The only keeper while the backdrop was up
2. After putting down all the toys to make him smile, pulling down the backdrop, he begins to grin
3. My favorite shot of the day
4. And just for fun, the supermodel shot

I like the lighting-I had to reread your second sentence to see that you got LITTLE good natural light, because the light you used looks awesome. It's nicely even and warm enough without being too warm. Very nice.
By the way, "busy" backgrounds with babies are sort of a hazard of taking pictures of 'em. You'll learn what's OK and what's too cluttered with experience.

I like your architecture shots as well, especially the last one. Can you fix the link for the second one?

MarkLT1, those are some really good shots (I prefer both 2 and 3), and you have a really cute kid as well. Not in an "all babies are cute" kind of way, 'cause not all babies are actually cute. Yours is genuinely camera-worthy, especially with the eyes, as #3 attests to.
I know I'm supposed to say that #2 had distracting elements in the background, but I actually like them because the colors are pleasant enough, and it makes the set-up feel more natural. No complaints from me there.

It really is amazing what one can do with a single good strobe into a white umbrella. The 60mm macro doesn't hurt either (not lighting-wise, but taking tack-sharp photos).
And I completely hear you about the "busy" background. I actually felt it lends a bit of realism to the photo- when do you ever see a baby outside of a hospital in a super clean environment?

Yes, his eyes are quite stunning! He definitely got his mother's eyes (though those long lashes come from me )

@mr. burns
It seems you really have a knack for architecture, the way you compose shapes, colors and lines seems to come very natural to you. I have never been much of an architecture photographer, but I really can appreciate your pictures. More of this, please
Now some complaints on a very high level: the first one is your weakest shot, something is missing that gives the pic some tension. The last one you've posted is as good as the last of the first post (the one that Demonhood also likes) are the best. Also the first one of your second post is excellent: where do you get these colors? Or do the different windows have differently colored light by design?

Waxcrash, I really like the colors you captured. And the squirrel is really nicely framed by the leaves. I think it would have been extremely cool if you could have had him pose while framed by more colorful leaves ( ), bu your shot is really nice.
