So in other words.... sounds pretty damn good.

I know my mom will NEVER use the task switcher or understand multitasking, the good thing is she doesn't have to in order for it to work just as well. Perfect.

Shame those of us who'd rather not use it still have to put up with it. I'd really like to get my double-tap home shortcut back.

You don't have to use it. In fact, most people probably won't use it. Most people will still launch apps from the home screen, the only difference is that now they will launch faster and/or retain their state if they were launched before.

But yes, losing the double-tap shortcuts does suck a bit.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

That's my gripe. I realize I won't have to use the app switcher and that's perfectly cool. But I will most likely have to give up on double-tapping home. This wouldn't really be an issue if we had alternative shortcuts. But with the iPhone's single button the options are a bit limited...

Not that I'd want six buttons like on an HTC though.

Double tapping home? Can't you just hit the... home button once to get home?

Double tapping the home button is currently a configurable shortcut. It takes me directly to my phone favorites list. In fact, it's the only way I access the phone functionality on my 3Gs.

You know those little red number icons that appear in the corner of app icons? What are those called? Notifications?

Anyway, what happens if an app in a folder has a little red notification icon? Does it show up on the folder icon, or do we have to open the folder to see it? Anyone know?

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

They are called badges.

From what I saw that if you have a failed SMS message the SMS icon gets a "!" icon. I assume the same thing will happen on a folder if an app within it has a notification badge.

California school first to use iPads in classroom

SANTA CRUZ, CALIF.—At Monte Vista Christian School, history textbooks could soon be a relic of the past. Ditto for tomes on biology and English literature. And spiral-bound notebooks and pens—who needs them?

They’re so old school when you have a 16GB iPad, and Monte Vista has 60 of the latest must-have technology from Apple for use in classrooms.

The iPads were introduced Thursday to advanced placement students who will participate in a pilot project. If all goes well, Headmaster Stephen Sharp anticipates replacing heavy and expensive textbooks with cheaper, interactive e-versions.

This would be nice.

I got bitten by the current OS's failure to add that badge today, when an SMS didn't go through and I was wondering why I wasn't getting a reply.

Yeap, the same thing happens if an email doesn't send. Also, if an app inside a folder has a notification, that folder will display the (!) icon.

I hoping that iPhone os 4 for ipad might have other and cooler features that haven't been announced yet.

The current iPad OS 3.2 has lots of features the iPhone 3.x doesn't have so it seems like a game of leapfrog.

Well, it appears at least the iPod shortcuts will remain available. From the latest OS 4.0 beta:

If you swipe to the left on the multitasking dock you bring up the orientation lock and iPod controls.

But looks like no dice for those who used the double-home shortcut for stuff other than iPod controls.

Maybe the widgets on the left of the multitask dock will be configurable just as double-tap is now. Maybe you'll be able to choose iPod controls, well...I'm not really sure what else you would put there.

They also changed the effects of changing between apps with beta 3. Now instead of fading in and out (like what happens when you hit the home button), it does a right to left swipe. It's pretty cool actually.

That is one feature that has been replaced with the new mutlitasking feature, but how would that be implemented using the above iPod control paradigm?

Maybe if you swiped to the left, it'd just lose the app-switcher and bring you into Phone favorites? Doesn't sound all that elegant, but maybe Apple could figure out a smooth way to do it.
