Whenever I want to import files from my digital Nikon 2500 camera, it does import the photo's, but as soon as I quit iPhoto, and later restart the app, the "last import" isn't the one I just downloaded from the cam. Then, since they are in the Pictures Folder, I thought about importing the files manually, but then the application crashes.

Very weird, specially since thjis happened as well when I was at the Apple Store in L.A., sitting at the Genius Bar, so I asked one of them, but they couldn't figure it out...so far for the definition of genius.

Does anyone of you has an idea and/or solution for this buggy behaviour, or is it already known and does it have to be updated in version 1.1.2? Happened in 10.2.2 as well, so that shouldn't be the reason, and I did a fresh install (first formatted the drive etc).

Thanks.

I just imported off my Plympus E10 and went off without a hitch. I quit and relaunched and the last import is intact. That doesn't sound buggy to me. You have an issue with your setup somehow, somewhere which does not make a great app buggy. Probably why the 'geniuses' couldn't figure it out.

Also, have you tried to drag and drop the images over? I'm running 1.1.1 and didn't know 1.1.2 was out. Are you running jaguar? Maybe after importing try to set up albums to see if the pics stay. As a last result, I'd delte your iphoto prefs and image catalogs and start fresh. Maybe make a back up the pics to manually drag back over.

Are you attaching the camera directly to the Mac, or to an USB hub? How about some useful info if you're actually asking for help -- and not just complaining

Was away for some days...

I deleted the prefs, I actually installed jaguar again, with all the updates until 10.2.3, and it does it again.

Usefull info? Nikon 2500 attached directly to USB port (#1) of my PowerBook G4-500MHz with 20 GB harddisk (not partitioned) and 768 MB RAM.
When I import from the camera it goes fine, but as soon as I quit and reopen, the pics are gone.
When I import a pic from elsewhere on my harddisk, it crashes.
How much more info do you want? I can copy the console log if you want?

Simple complaining? When a app crashes, and not just now and then but always, I would say that's named buggy.

I experienced exactly the same problem yesterday. In fact, after importing, the pictures were copied to my iPhoto library in my pictures folder, but I couldn't see them anywhere in iPhoto.

I had to reimport them 3 times to get it to stick.

I had one crash during that period as well. This is on an iBook 600, 640 MB RAM OS X 10.2.3.

I hope a new version of iPhoto comes out at Macworld!

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output

If you take a look at this thread you'll read we are not the only guys with this problem, despite some people say it is just stupid complaining...

And yes, indeed the pics do get into the Pictures folder, but do not show up in the iPhoto library.

One day I'll find out why...

If you visit this thread you can see that I had a similar problem. I solved the problem by deleting the following items:

iPhoto app
com.iphoto.plist in ~/Library/Preferences
iphoto cache in ~/Caches/
AlbumData.xml in ~/Library/iApps/iPhoto
I reinstalled iPhoto 1.1.1 and all went back to normal, I hope this helps. I had just deleted the first 3 items in the list and continued to have the same problems, but removing the albumdata.xml was the kicker. Hope this helps.

Well, the same damn problem started with me. I tried the above steps (except that I could not find ~/Caches/ ) When I started iPhoto after reinstalling it came up with all of my pictures in one big pile. I'm not sure why. I'm not intimately familiar with iPhoto but it looks like it should have every thing it needs in the photolibrary directory. I restored the plist and xml files and it looks like it did before but the problem is still there.

I looked through the photo library some of the pictures I imported today were showing up in the directory for two days ago.

This is the first time my Mac has pissed me off since switching last March. I hope apple fixes this soon this is a very significant bug. Hopeflully iPhoto 1.2 will fix this. I noticed you have to dig around to find 1.1.1 on the apple site now.

appleman- it's not that you are complaining, but I don't think you can call iPhoto 'buggy' when only a few people experience your problem out of the tens of thousands of iphoto users. I know they all don't post here, but ratio wise your unfortunate situation seems to be system related rather iPhoto being a buggy app.

Doh! I thought the cache was in the library I don't know how I missed that when I looked there. The fix still did not work. Nor did the one linked to on Apple's site. Nor several variations of them. Oh well, I think I'll just wait a couple of weeks and see if 1.2 fixes this. Hell one of the reasons I switched to a Mac was so I wouldn't have to waste time assing around with junk like this.

I'll disagree with the last assement of the severity of the bug. You also have to take into account the impact of the bug not just the number of people affected. The impact is huge: the application does not perform its main purpose. Even a just a few people complaining of this should be noteworthy. It's not like some minor feature that's not working correctly.

have you all ruled out other problems? Hard disk corruption/fragmentation? RAM problems and the like? How full is your hard disk? What other apps do you have running?

It definitely sounds like a severe problem, but if it's system dependent (as it seems to be with many many people experiencing no hint of this sort of problem) it'd difficult to tell whether it's really Apple's problem (and whether its something they could really fix).

If it's not hardware, perhaps you're all running some kernal extension or haxie or something that somehow messes with resources iPhoto uses.

The 'last import' has never been maintained between iPhoto 'sessions'. If you look in the Photo Library and check the 'Film Rolls' box at the bottom you would see your images sorted by import.

Then, since they are in the Pictures Folder, I thought about importing the files manually, but then the application crashes.
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. iPhoto stores the files in folders within the 'iPhoto Library'. These files are placed there and an index created to them. If you re-insert them into iPhoto it will try and put them in the same place again. This is probably something that the developers didn't think of (never underestimate the power of users to do the unexpected) and has corrupted the iPhoto database.

If you've not solved it yet here is my suggestion:-

1. backup and rename the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/ folder.
2. launch iPhoto
3. Check that it creates a new, empty library.
4. Import each directory in the old iPhoto library one at a time. Quit and relaunch iPhoto between each one.

Very weird, specially since thjis happened as well when I was at the Apple Store in L.A., sitting at the Genius Bar, so I asked one of them, but they couldn't figure it out...so far for the definition of genius.
Did you tell them exactly what you did?

I don't normally like using the smiley things but this new one is appropriate

Well as is very common, the best solution is very simple yet easily overlooked in the heat of the moment. I opened iPoto, went to the last roll I successfully brought in, then deleted it. Now it appears to work fine. I'll play around with it some more later today and see if that's still the case.

Not sure if it was some disk hiccup, memory glitch, some sub atomic particle from space causing a bit to slip, or what that caused the corruption. Whatever it was I hope 1.2 deals with it a little better.
