I just read an article in which Mcneally, ( spellingmightbewrong)of Sun microsystems said that Microsoft is a majority shareholder of Apple.
is that right? I know microsoft owns part of apple, but majority?
With microsoft's recent aquisition of Corel, which distributes Linnux this bring the operating system market share to.....99-100%??

M$ invested $150 million in Apple for shares of non-voting stock when Apple was at about $15 to $16 range. They are not even close to being the majority share holder.

After the iMac released and Apple hit the $70 range, they split their stock to something like 150 million shares. Microsoft's "big" steak in Apple isn't so big anymore.

Oh, and as I recall, didn't Apple buy back the stock?

If you want percentages...

M$ owns 90% of the office application suites used on all computer

83% of desktop computers are braced with Windoze.

Now get the idea how much Micro$oft owns? I knew you'd understand.

Play it cool

83% i like that number better than 90-95%. I think scot mcneally, Sun, ( ithinkthatshisname) was just blowiing stuff out his a** because he really hates microsoft.

FYI, Microsoft dumped all their shares a quarter or two back.

They (the Redmond people) are no longer registered as shareholders in various reports.
By the way, the just released AppleWorks 6.1 can read Word and Excel files up to the 2001 version. So you have no more reason to buy the expensive and unefficient MS Office

I love office!

It's interface is SO much better than that of AppleWorks.

Only it's dependence on MS OLE bugs me.

I personally like Office 2001 (in fact, Entourage has got to be my most core app). The only thing that pisses me off is Word's grammar checker - probably because it is virutal non-existent, and has worse grammer than a second grader. Also misses 99% of grammar errors. Someone mentioned to me that WordPerfect has a great grammar checker but I'm afraid to install since they haven't updated their software in what seems like a million years. How is the grammar checking in AppleWorks? If it's good, maybe I'll pick one up at Educational pricing and check it out.
