A friend of mine was telling me he heard Apple and HP merged. Has anyone heard about this? I do know that Apple and HP were working together with the iPods. So I was just wondering if anyone had any insight on this.

Ask your friend where he got this information, because it sounds like he's the only one who knows it. Apple is a tiny company, compared to HP, and there would be no reason for HP to have an interest in it.

Tell your friend that Microsoft owns both HP and Apple, but Sony owns Microsoft, but HP recently purchased Microsoft, who in turn purchased Sony.

If such a thing happened it would be CNN coverage about it. That would be a major thing and it would be all over the place and easy to find info about it.

No apple/HP merger, but there is a deal Apple made with HP where HP essentially resells apple ipods "Apple iPod +HP", and in turn HP has to bundle iTunes with every computer they sale.

I wouldn't call a 30 billion dollar company tiny even compared to a 56 billion dollar one, but you're way off saying that there would be no reason for them to have an interest in it. Almost everyone has interest in Apple, especially now that they are doing so well.

A (PC owner) friend of mine told me the Mac mini was nothing more than a repackaged Xbox with Mac OS X installed, and that half the money from Mac mini's goes to Bill Gates, because Microsoft bought a share of Apple a few years ago and thats why they had Internet Explorer on Macs.

this is sorta off topic but why did mac os x come bundled with internet explorer.

Internet Explorer and Netscape came bundled with Macs for years. When OS X was released, IE was by far the favourite browser under OS 9, and the only browser that functioned decently under OS X.

Almost. OmniWeb was available and was (even then) a much nicer browser. However, there were a lot of sites that didn't play nicely with OmniWeb (which has since been overcome).

At the time, IE was the only OS X browser that would work with 99% of web sites. It was a POS, but there was little other choice.

I always used OmniWeb at that time, and only used IE, when needed. Nowadays, I use Camino, and never use IE.

Yes there was. OmniWeb has been around a LOT longer than OS X has. It was on Next Step and it was on the public beta of OS X, before the official release.

I'm not sure where you get $30 billion from, but last quarter, Apple had it's best quarter ever, and did $3.49 billion in sales. If you're very optimistic and multiply that times 4, you under $14 billion; that's under 1/4 of HP's revenues.

I will still maintain that HP has no interest in purchasing Apple; it's an entirely different culture and product, and I'm sure Carly Fiorina knows that. It would still be a distraction to them.

Yeah, but a program still required some porting from NextStep to OS X. Not to mention OmniWeb was built for x86, not PPC Rhapsody/OS X.

Yeah, but I would have bet you all the money in the world that Mercedes would have no interest in purchasing Chrysler. After that incident I'd believe anything, especially a huge bland 'clone' company purchasing a tight lean creative powerhouse that they've already shown interest in marketing said company's hot products.

The value of a company is listed in their financial reports as the number of shares times the value of each share. There are other ways of valuing companies I'm sure.

I think you missed the point, which was that OmniWeb FOR OS X was out before OS X was, at least before version 10.0 was. I ran it on the OS X public beta.
