The Prius has a point. Not one that I like, but it has a point. Like most Toyotas, it exists to complete the car's transformation into an appliance.

Highway 174 out of Colfax into Grass Valley is one heck of a ride. Lots of tight turns with an occasional straight away. It's just north east of Sacramento. My dad takes his Porsche on it whenever he gets the chance, he says it's one of the best little highways he's driven on. It's also nicely paved.

SR152 between Watsonville and Gilroy is a nice road too. I could make a whole thread on great places to drive in California.

Yeap. And anything along the northern California coastline is amazing as well. Even if the road turned to dirt, the views would still be worth it.

Yes, compilation. I'm trying out Chrome and auto-corrects typos as I type, so I don't always notice it's the wrong word.

OK. New nomination for the most pointless car ever...

The specific car which brought SpectateSwamp back from the golf course.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

Man. I love the VW microbus. One of my friends used to have one. Such a fun vehicle, and kinda fun to work on too. I'd like to have one.

Hey lay off the VW. I grew up in a Red "Tin Top" Camper. Same as the regular without the pop-up top. Pops felt it was more aerodynamic looking. I'll never forget the memories of sleeping over the front seats on my canvas sheet. Listening to the wild animals prowling outside with the window slightly cracked. All the while knowing I was safe in the "Tin Top".

So, you missed page 4. It was not the VW Van as a whole. Actually, it was the VW Van as polizei car. Would you approve such an heresy?

Like I said, an American thing.

The VW van was a delivery and utility vehicle here for fifteen years before hippies even happened, and it was certainly a cultural icon here - but one that represent the Wirtschaftswunder, the economic upswing following the dire post-war years.

The post office, the police force, and any carpenter or plumber who could now afford a car drove Beetles or VW vans/pickups.

And in the mid-fifties, VW introduced the version with extra seats - the van that exploded onto the international stage during the hippie era over a decade later - that was a symbol for the newly affluent holiday-maker families in Germany.

Actually, I said that they used BUGS as police cars, not vans.

Actually, I was referring to parsley posting a pic of a German police van, prompting me to ask why he felt that it was "pointless".

I've now understood, and tried to explain why that didn't occur to me (being German).

I think he meant "ironic", though, and not "pointless".

Tempting, but I'd disagree. For example, Rob has posted a lot about an Audi he really, really liked. He makes a lot of points about it that are solid and supported by something other than his personal preference-IIRC it was inexpensive for him to buy because it wasn't the mainstream Audi most people think of, and it performed well without a lot of fuss and upkeep.

A lot of the time, Rob states his personal preferences as "irrefutable fact," but sometimes there's some real, objective stuff in there too.

So far, I've never owned a "pointless" car. Sometimes the "point" was "getting back and forth to work without getting too wet," but no car or bike I've ever owned was totally pointless. Sub-optimal? YOU BETCHA!!! (I had a "on its last legs" Corolla for a summer, and I spent as much time making sure it didn't run out of oil as I did driving it...)

Rob's had good cars. Calling the Civic or Accord pointless is, well, pointless. The SVX may have been a pointless car for Subaru though.
