According to http://www.macosxrumors.com , Valve are watching the Mac market closely to decide if it's worth porting. MacOS X makes life much easier when porting the game than MacOS 9 does.

Here's your chance to maybe sway them:

Though I've never heard of a single online petition actually changing anything, I've signed it anyway. I was # 1247 or something like that.

Howzabout a little more specificity? You can't make statements like that with no backing evidence and expect people to take you seriously.

I completely agree. The interactivity level in Half-Life 2 is very jaw-dropping.

When it was released, I never saw a gaming publication that gave away a Game of the Year award, to anything but Half Life.

The traptown video was sweet.

After having seen the n-nth fps, I am personally getting tired of this genre. Its all about reality for me. Having played a little bit of Doom 3, however, I'd say its a step in the right direction.

Doom 3's graphics are awesome, but I come back to it - I've never see anything like what was contained in the HL2 vids. The level of realism/interactivity is just phenomenal.

I've seen the E3 teaser from this year and didn't notice anything particularly real or interactive. I may have missed something. Would you describe what you saw as realistic or interactive about HL2 from the vids.

Download OS X Bink video player:

Where do they get that information from ? I think most mac-users in my country, only game on their Mac or Macs. Mac users here often stay out of the Windows world. A PC with Linux (or other *NIX OS's) or Amiga is okay, but in Norway most mac users are newbies.

I will never turn over to the dark side.

Very impressed.

I had a look at three of the videos and Kleiner Lab was my favourite.

Half Life 2 seems to have an "atmosphere" thing going for it which earns my two thumbs up.

*Ducks* Still looks like another FPS ...

Make sure you watch traptown, it makes for a good display of some of the interesting things the HAVOC physics engine does. Bugbait is pretty cool too.

Two of the best clips should be out any day now though. The dune buggy driving one and the one where they're fighting the giant strider things (that go around impaling people and trashing buildings). Afterward they'll start in on brand new, previously unseen footage until the game's release.

Half-Life 2 is one of the main reasons I'm a bit sceptical about buying a Mac laptop over a PC laptop. I have a Gamecube for playing games, and I can live without most of the ones that come out for the PC, but if Half-Life 2 is as good as the first Half-Life it'll easily be, in my opinion, game of the year.

In the meantime, I'm going to order RealMYST as soon as I get my PowerBook. I never got around to playing it back in the day but I've always meant to.

By the way, does anyone know what the system requirements for Doom 3 for the Mac will be?

I believe minimum was quoted at 1 gHz with a GF 2MX,running very crappily. That's PC but no way will it be lower for the Mac.

HL2 is supposed to be released to PC September 30, 2003.

The minimum is supposed to be 700MHz P3. the G4 requirement would probably be 500MHz, but I'm just guessing.

When I used a PC (before I fell in love with Macs), Half Life was the first game I purchased/paid for and I absolutely loved it. The graphics were as good as Quake 2, the leading 3d shooter of the time, but Valve added some very nice touches that made it more "real" like characters that talked to you (and their heads always faced you while they were talking even if you moved around).

HL2 will be good, but will it have the same driving storyline that HL did? Probably... that's what made it great. I'll sign the petition if it supports dual processors down to 800MHz and still runs well.

i like to think positively but I don't think that they will spend the time to port half life 2. half life 2 is an incredibly advanced complicated game, and there doesn't seem to be much of a market for mac games. I don't think they will find it worth there recources.

I hope they do though

I agree. I don't care for HL2 nor Doom 3, even though Doom will come. I want Deus Ex 2 ! Number one was really good. One of the few games I actually started playing it again when I was done. I rarley play a game more than once, when I make it, it is bye bye...

Multiplayer ofcourse, is another story. Which Deus Ex was no good at. We need Deus Ex 2 to be more like the Qukae 2 multiplayer, where you have missons that you cooperate on.

It having a complex physics model (and beautiful, I must say) shouldn't have any bearing on whether they port it or not; it really shouldn't be an issue. How well it will run on older Mac hardware might. Or if they just don't give a crap about the Mac, more likely. Hopefully someone gets to port it even if they don't.

Not a petition fan to begin with, but that petition isn't well written(some technical comments which make no sense), but I have seen worse. It's probably a waste since anyone that would be involved in a Mac port already knows the market is there so IMO a petition isn't going to sway anyone toward making a port. I'm sure the Mac publishers are trying to get HL2.

There's a new demo video out that shows off some of the DX9 effects that Source (the 3D engine that Half-life 2 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines use). It's not the same one from E3.

Currently it's only up at fileplanet and fileshack , but it should be all over filemirrors.com soon.

Here's a torrent for it if anyone doesn't want to wait in the line:
http://www.3dgamers.com/dlexit/torre...hdr02.exe.html

(bink video again, 116MB)

There is an additional reason for Valve to port HL2 to the Mac. This time around, they developed their own game engine, the Source engine. It is being licensed to other game developers even before HL2 is released.

Anyone who uses the Source engine for their game, will need it ported to Mac in order to release their own game on the Mac. Valve probably wants to build a game-engine franchise like Epic and Id have with the UT and Quake engines, those bring in some real money.

Other game developers are more likely to consider the Source engine if it is available on all significant platforms. If it's not available, then they can always license the Doom3 engine instead.

except it was all scripted.
you know, with the recent leak of the source, ppl. actually got it to run, and it was all scripted.

for instance, that part when gordon freeman blocks a door with a table, some militia try to open it and they can't so after a few attempts they kick in ?

that's scripted, it doesn't matter wether you put the table or not.

stuff like that.

I'm not saying that the engine doesn't have the capabilities of doing such things, but E3 footage isn't much of a reference as to the final product.

Realise this might make me a heathen but isn't it coming out on the Xbox?

I mean it'd be nice to have on a Mac but surely as the hardware's getting pretty cheap now...

I don't follow.

Mac HL2 = $50 software
Xbox HL2 = $50 software + $200 Xbox

Seems like to play it on the Xbox would cost me $200 more, to first buy an Xbox from M$. Isn't it $200 cheaper to just buy the Mac version and play it on my G4? If I have to upgrade, then the upgrade will benefit all my other games, and my non-game activities.
