So i exchanged the HD in my 17" PB.

As i removed the old drive i noticed a small metal tab underneath, in which someone had scratched "hi"!!!

Anyone else noticed any hidden messages from apple in their machines?

lol ... you serious? ... NO WAY!

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

No, no pic I'm afraid! i was too concerned with the 2 dozen screws, 2 hard drives and powerbook pieces all around me!

Although when it was all back together, i wondered what i was worrying about, it was reasonably easy! And the speed difference between the old 4,200rpm drive and the new 5,400rpm one is quite noticeable, boot time is waaaay quicker, so are app opening times, Word opens in a blink. (and im not exaggerating!)

Also the way it came apart and went back together perfectly amazed me. Like y'know how you take something apart, put it back together, and it never really feels the same, not as solid etc, but the powerbook fells as good and solid as the day i bought the thing. I knew these things were well put together, but i was surprised.

So if it was so easy, take it apart again, snap a pic, and post it!

I have one of those old macs (can't remember the model number) with the etched signatures of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and the rest of the Mac team on the inside of the case - very cool.

I had to open the case and I found a bunch of graffiti on the inside - it took me about six hours to remove the monitor and logic boads and wipe down the inside with sandpaper to get it back to spec.

Sheeesh. What a pain.

Here are the signatures on the inside of the Mac SE:

http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/mac_se/sigs3.jpg

These were present in EVERY SE that I know of. I have opened up two of them so far and both had them. So if you see someone trying to get $50 for a "RARE MAC SE W/ SIGNATURES!!!" on eBay, they're officially an asshat.

I opened mine up expecting to see a cute message. The message was so small I needed a magnifying glass. I rummaged thru the house for 15 minutes until I found one and took a look at the message. It said fsck you. I am mad now.

Is your machine a refurb? And any ideas where the refurbs come from? Are they shipped back to Taiwan or...?

Sorry to disappoint, but I didn't make that, it was found online and I took a copy of it. But if you are going to use it, PLEASE save it and host it yourself. I pay for bandwidth and I'm not a company or anything (see the link), and on a major site like this I see plenty of usage w/o someone else linking to it.
