Run and get it--it fixes the Adium problems, and much more.

I was hoping that this would bring on what the beta testers have been teasing us with,
but no

sheesh... another big yay for Tiger users...

This update is simply adding features that were going to come out with that other theme app company. The one that does all that nice vapor ware...

Really... What would have been nice / useful is if the GUIkit format had the ability to detect which OS one was using and grab the correct resources for that OS. At this point, there are only a few resources that themers would have to put into the Panther resource area in ThemePark.

So, instead of pleasing all of the paying users of Shapeshifter... We have an update that is really a preemptive strike against competition, while serving only some of their clientele.

Thanks for the update... I guess.

Not really an update for Panther users here...

Conundrum Software I think is their name... However, there were only a few screenshots showing what is now a new feature of SS in the app that was planned for release. SS releasing this doesn't boad well for Conundrum.

Yes, I use Panther. Tiger has issues with 1.8GH SP G5s (Which is an entirely different issue all together.)
Go ahead and update... this update does fix some things for Panther, however it really doesn't add anything to it. Therefore, it is only a minor update for us two Panther users...You won't screw anything up.

My complaints are pointed in that there isn't an equal amount of attention paid to Panther users, even though our $20 is worth the same. No matter how they want to look at it.

I'm grateful for the new color-shifting feature of Shapeshifter - which unfortunately are limited to Tiger users. But that isn't Unsanity's fault. Panther doesn't have the capability to achieve the effect. Overall though, this update is welcomed greatly by Tiger users.

That being said, I'm also disappointed that the new themes being released aren't "Panther-ready." Unfortunately, I'm stuck using Panther at work and it sucks to not be able to use Powder or Samui, etc...

What do you mean, issues with 1.8 GHz G5s? Does this only apply to the PowerMacs? What sorts of issues?

well i hope you are complaining as much to apple too, so you can use tiger on your machine...it's not that the creators of SS are ignoring you about panther..it's just that its like asking for 10.1, 10.2 support..it's not gonna happen...new features come with new OS's and the old ones get left behind...such as life
Yesterday is History,
Tomorrow's a Mystery,
Today is a Gift...
Which is why it is called the Present.

I had the same problem of guiTweak crashing on me every time I applied a CoreImage effect. It only crashes while saving the changes, however (which also takes a while, even on a 2.5Ghz Dual G5 w/2GB RAM).

Oddly enough, it successfully saves my changes, but like I said, it crashes.

How do I send a crash log? And/or should I copy/paste? I just don't know where to get the exact info you need.

Okay, if you're getting crashes, please contact me. My name is "jason". It's at the company that's responsible for ShapeShifter.

Based on the crashlogs (no more, please!), it looks like this is YACIB (Yet Another Core Image Bug). I've spent a lot of time banging up against them. The first log is crashing in the bowels of Core Image, and the second one looks like it might be crashing while cleaning up Core Image stuff.

When you contact me, please send a system report from System Profiler.app so that I can see the details of your video card.

Thanks!

And once again! No response about Panther compatibility!!!

Yes, of course I have contacted apple regarding the G5 issue. For more info on that issue, please see the thread about it in the Powermac section here in the Macnn Forums.

OK, while I understand that supporting 10.1 is impossible, You MUST understand that SS already detects your OS. SS already has the ability to apply Panther themes and Tiger themes in one app... So, whats the big deal with changing SS and ThemePark just enough to be able to have themers put the necessary resources in an area in TP so that when someone tries to apple a Tiger theme it will work! Shoot, it would be an OS X theme at that point. Man, I've played around with themes enough to know that it would add like two to five minutes the development of a theme.

Panther doesn't support Core Imaging as Tiger does. That's an OS limitation of Panther and not so much of Shapeshifter.

And I totally understand this... However, It seems like there are enough people to constitute continued support for Panther. I don't expect any of the CoreImage stuff because it doesn't exist for Panther... However, I don't think my above request is too much trouble.

I didn't respond because I thought you were griping, not actually asking.

ShapeShifter does a lot of voodoo to make 10.1, Jaguar and Panther themes work properly on Tiger. It's nowhere near as easy as you might think.

Consider permutation mathematics. Consider different versions of an operating system, and different versions of skinnable apps within those operating systems. Then, consider that making ShapeShifter back-apply a Tiger theme to Panther does not double the amount of code I need to write - it factorial of n's it.

Remember that ShapeShifter does not apply themes blindly - it does a lot of work along the way to make sure that the theme can be applied safely on the target OS, given the design OS. That's a lot of work behind the scenes, as I said.

That said, themes created for Panther or earlier work great on Panther. Themes created for a newer operating system do not. That's a reality of software design in general, not just ShapeShifter.

Is it possible for me to add the ability? Yes. But it's not worthwhile in expenditure of time. People who use SS are cutting edge by definition, and the vast majority are already on Tiger. Of those who aren't, the vast majority will be six months from now. Adding the feature you want will take me large amounts of time, not just now, but in all future testing as well. It just ain't worth it.

Whenever possible, I add new features to all supported operating systems, not just the newest one. For example, when ShapeShifter was still supported on Jaguar, icon changing worked on Jaguar. Making it work was a bitch, and there were probably about nine people who actually took advantage of it. But when it's possible, and not insane to support, we do it. ShapeShifter 2.2, as another example, contains one Tiger-only feature - guiTweak. Everything else is Tiger/Panther.

Regarding guiTweak - it uses Core Image. Core Image is only available on Tiger. If Apple wants to back-port Core Image to Panther, I'll be glad to support guiTweak there. I don't think they will, though.

So, sorry for the bad news. Hope you understand the reasons now.

I'm sorry that some people are having problems with this incredible advance in the capabilities of SS. I'm sure that everything will get fixed; either within OS X or in SS.

For me, it works great. Some of the Core Image stuff makes themes look really bad (or very interesting, if you like weird!), but a simple color shift tweak gives new life into favorite themes.

I, like many, have discarded themes because dominant color choices didn't quite fit my personality; even though the theme itself was interesting. Now, the long hours spent carefully crafting buttons and scroll bars can be enjoyed by anyone through the simple act of shifting the color a bit or toning down (perceived) harsh lines or gradients. [The future possibilities of adding Core Image capabilities to SS boggles the imagination.]

This is an exciting aspect of the continuing development of ShapeShifter.

Bravo!

Thank you Jason,

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I thank you for all of your hard work, and I'm glad that SS works on Panther at this point as well as it does.

Man... I am "this" close to reinstalling Tiger so I can try out that new feature... Man! I may just have to live with a crash or two / day (Just a note to all, these crashes are NOT SS related.)

Thanks again,

Ryan Clark

Now it works. I made a new account to test it there and it worked there, then I disabled all the APEs except ShapeShifter, logged in/logged out, then tested it and it worked. I re-enabled all the APEs and it still works. Strange stuff it is :-\

hmmmm, its working fine for me now... I didin't change anything, and i havn't restarted since it was installed. (I did log out/in right after intall though).

At first i thought maye if i choose 'file > save as guikit' from withen guiTweek it will work. I tried that and it worked perfectly. Before this i always clicked the window close widget and it asked if i wanted to save, then crashed after choosing a name for it. now its working both ways flawlessly.

Hmm, this might be the issue. I just tried it (clicking close widget), and it didn't crash, but the window closed before the new variant had finished generating. That's not how I designed it to work.

Shall do more investigating.

guiTweak works fine for me - but I wish we could apply filters to the default Aqua theme. I really just want some colourthemes for Aqua.

Well, guiTweak "works." But it doesn't "work." The filters apply and preview fine, but it takes so long to create a variant that I just clicked Cancel.

It's surprising that SS still supports older OSs after all the bitching you guys do

I'm still disappointed as how slowly SS seems to be coming along (at at the complete lack of competition), but I'm sure you guys are doing your best and it's not your fault that creating haxies is so difficult Thanks for the update!

Do you have itunes 7 installed? I had this same problem and discovered that they have released ss 2.4b4 that fixes this issue. Check their web blog for the link.
