Alrighty. I had said I would create a newer version of this thread once the PCIe G5s were in the wild, which they are. And now that we're ringing in 2006, the time is that much better.

The original thread had been slightly inaccurate as I forgot a few machines initially, namely the Cube, which I added later on, and the NuBus machines, which I've added to this round on the off chance that somebody is still using one as their main machine.

As before, this will be a nice way to see how the paradigm is shifting with the Power Mac user base.

I've left a "Single or Dual?" option next to machines that shipped in single and dual processor configurations. If you have one of those machines, please specify.

I myself have a Power Mac G5 PCI-X, Dual 2.5GHz, Revision 2.

I had a Power Mac 6100/60 AV which I gave away, though I don't think it's being used, which is a shame, because it is still quite capable of doing word processing on ClarisWorks and many other useful things. My main machine is my eMac now, but I have an upgraded Power Mac 8600/200 (to a 400Mhz. G3) which is still being used extensively for web browsing, e-Mail and word processing, and has even been given new life now that it is running Mac OS X (Panther).

My next desktop Mac will either be a mini (or like) or a Power Mac. I don't necessarily need all that processing power, but I really do like the expandability, and I don't want another desktop Mac with an integrated screen again.

I have a PM 8600 250 with lodz of RAM ZIP drive etc. with a SONY Trinitron calibrated (I am a graphic guy) Excellent machine, but I now work mostly on my iBook G4 with 1,25GB of RAM and FW HDs ;o)

I just got my dualcore 2ghz with 7800 gpu and 3 gigs ram, but could only spring for 20" apple LCD. Still it is pretty dang fast. Oh yeah, I went with Raptor 10K drive too. Too bad I couldn't get white wall tires, mag wheels, and dual four-barrel carbs, ha!

I remember when I joined this board, and I posted to a thread just like this. At that time, my MDD dual 1.25 FW800 with a gig of ram was a jaw dropper.

I was surprised when I got the dual G4, cause it was much better than I had imagined it would be. The biggest thing for me, a lifelong (and still) PC user was the numbers. Seeing things like ATA66 and Firewire 400 scared me a bit, but seeing the whole dual processor thing, and the gigabit ethernet thing made me think this machine was ahead of its time back then. I got it, tigered it, and put in a faster optical (found out the hard way while installing 10.4). It runs faster than the dell desktop in the basement.. by far. It outperforms some of the pc's that my buddies have at our LAN parties. Not to mention it's got the capacity to run that high end software I wanted to run on my powerbook but couldn't cause of the G4/500. Overall, minus the ATA66 thing (getting a PCI card for it soon), I am quite impressed with this computer, and I will hold onto it for a long time. For the record...the dell is not mine, and I never touch it.

My main Powermac is my new Quad + 7800GT with 7GB RAM (has a Raptor for boot and a Hitachi 500 GB for everything else --- until the PCIe SATA cards arrive to hook up the external enclosures.


Unfortunately, I am slowly becoming the Imelda Marcos of Macs because I also have:

1. A souped up Cube -- my very first Powermac (a Valentine's Day gift!) -- my personal fileserver

2. An upgraded Sawtooth for the family's Media server

And today someone at work gave me a rev 2 G3 B&W! -- I will turn it into a fileserver in the lab.

I leave out the array of PBs and iBooks, but suffice it to say that everyone in my household has their own.

Hmmmm - something about these machines.

I just ordered a Dual Core 2.0 G5 and a 20" ACD. Upgraded to the 6600 Video card with 256MB and a 250GB HD, plus BT and Airport. An extra 2GB of RAM from Crucial is on the way as well.

I went back and forth between this and one of the new 20" Intel iMacs, but I've wanted a PowerMac for a while and I wanted it to work. I'm not too concerned with any speed difference between the two as my current machine is a 4-year old 667Mhz TiBook.

I got a 1.8ghz SP G5 really cheap, and since Apple released the firmware update in November, it actually works now.

I put in 2GB of RAM, a 300GB hard drive, an ATI R X800 video card, and a dual layer 16x burner, and now it runs great!

I absolutely LOVE this machine. It's STILL faster than I need it to be. It makes me wait for nothing. I doubt I'll be replacing it anytime soon. I'll add more RAM and an extra drive though I'm sure.

Purchased one of the last G4 Mdds a little over a year,ago. This has been another great Mac for me!
I still wanted an OS 9 bootable machine in case of OS X issues, I could still get graphics work done in OS 9 in a pinch.
Only has CD/DVD combo drive, but I am using an external FW TDK 8X DVD writer
I've upgraded the video card to a 128 MB VRAM ATI 9600 Pro Mac/PC edition.
Full 2 GB of RAM
Installed (2) new internal 120 GB HD's plus added (2) 250 GB external FW HDs. All WD brand drives.

Let's see, I own a MDD Dual 1.25ghz G4 Powermac with 2.0gb of RAM and a 200gb 8mb cache maxtor hard drive, an 80gb hard drive, and two other 80gb hard drives in a striped RAID set and the stock ATI Radeon 9000. Also it has a set of the Apple pro speakers and an iSub, as well as an iSight mounted on a 17" Apple Studio Display.

My wife's computer is an 20" intel iMac with 1.5gb of RAM and the standard 128mb video card. I gave her my soundsticks, and bought an external Plumax firewire enclosure for her 120gb hard drive she had on her dual 867mhz G4, that died recently. I have to say the imac is really nice. Much nicer than I had initially thought.

I love my MDD, and as mucha s I may want a new G5, it really gives me no reason to have to switch.

I've got an MDD Dual 867 MHz with 1.25 GB of RAM, a 250 GB HDD (did have a 120 GB as well, but that just died), and a Radeon 9700 Pro. I'm pretty sure the combination of RAM and the upgraded graphics card (128 MB) have really kept it usable to this day.

This should really be a multiple option poll, though, because I also have a B&W G3 (450 MHz with 448 MB RAM) sitting downstairs. It's not used for much, but it's still mine.
