i keep my finders with icon-only sidebars at 32x32...see here. it stays this way in all my window that I click through the finder icon in the dock and drive icons from the desktop, but whenever i download a folder or make a new folder it keeps turning back to this with the full sidebar and the bottom of sidebar a few pixels off. nomatter how much i keep resizing the sidebar and window, it keeps going back to that on the desktop... i remeber it used to be fine, but now it just annoys the crap out of me.

Sorry for your trouble. That is, unfortunately, just how it is.

Close all Finder windows and then open a new one. Make sure you don't click the contents at all. Set up the window as you would like it to be whenever you open a new one (but don't click the contents) and then close it. All new windows will now open in this layout. Downloads are a different matter altogether as it seems to depend on how the person who created the download had there window set up.
