Sometimes people will bitch about anime, at which point I will direct their attention to one of Hayao Miyazaki's films (such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke) and they'll suddenly say, "Hey... that wasn't bad at all!"
For the record, Spirited Away is not a movie for children (as in only for them), it's simply one of those amazing movies that's suitable for all ages. Just like Toy Story, Lion King, and all the rest, Spirited Away has a large fan-base that consists of people of all ages.
Like others have pointed out, "anime" is simply an art form, saying you hate it would be as ridiculous as saying, "I hate all Hollywood films" (yeah, I hear you, but that's not really what you mean).
I echo Chuckit's suggestions, those are all great films/series. I'd add to that list Princess Mononoke, a more mature film, perhaps not suitable for very young kids. I like to think of it as a harder version of Fern Gully.
Yeah, buddy, when a movie is "suitable for all ages" it almost always means its for children or families that only consist of young children, if you went around asking random people from the ages of 10-25 pretty much none of them would have an interest in toy story or something like that.
And anime is animated the same, it is a category, Hollywood is not a category, it is a place, Thriller is a category, comedy is a category, just like when you go to blockbuster, they are there, just like the category anime. Anime is animated in a very repetitive/annoying style and I Hate it.

You mean people can't tell them from folks who have developed clear, fully assed, informed infatuations with Japan?
Seriously, though, I kind of know what you mean.

Somebody actually asked around my office the other day. Two of the four other people there said they loved Toy Story. Three said they liked Shrek. Basically everybody in the cinema department at my school loved Finding Nemo to death.
And you don't think 10-year-olds are interested in cartoons? Are you putting me on?

OK, seriously, what are you talking about? Some cartoons are hand-drawn, some are CGI, some are done realistically, some are done very stylized, some are done colorfully, some are done with muted tones… How on earth are they all "animated the same … in a very repetitive/annoying style"?

WTF are you on? I'm 25 and I just recently saw Toy Story 1 and 2 for the first time and I absolutely loved them.

I know you're just kidding around, but you've just proved my point. For me to have put 11 years into learning the language it must be an "infatuation." Why can't it be an academic interest, as normal as an interest in history, or physics, or computers? I didn't get into Japanese because of ninjas, samurais, or Godzilla (anime wasn't as big when I started as it is now), but the otakus have tainted peoples' perception of the country and any non-Japanese person associated with it.
And to seriously address your point, yes, in America you can just say "I'm not like them" because Americans can, in general, wrap their heads around the idea that people are different. But in Japan, where there is no cult of individuality, one black sheep makes the whole flock look bad.

Is that really the average Japanese's opinion of Americans, though? I mean, I know that their culture is largely based around conformity and stereotypes, but living in the area I do, I've known enough Japanese people to have a distinctly different idea of public opinion. Most Japanese who come here actually seem kind of surprised at the presence of anime otaku in America, for whatever reason.
(I'm not saying you're lying if that's what you have experienced. I'm just curious.)

The kind of Japanese person that goes to America, much less lives in America, is very different from Japanese people who live in Middle-Of-Nowhere, Japan. They tend to be much more open-minded, adventurous, and willing to accept individual differences.
You're right though that most Japanese people are simply unaware of how popular anime is in America. But every once in a while you get a story on TV news about some overweight basement dweller dressed up like Sailor Moon parading about Tokyo, and it just makes everyone cringe.

Not all anime is the same. It is as simple as that.

Yeah... Sub you pretty much lose on this point. There are millions of >10 year olds who love Disney classics and the like.

Then what exactly is Thiller-anime? Comedy-anime? Action-anime? Sci-fi-anime? Horror-anime? Romance-anime? Soap-opera-anime? Porno-anime?
Is that like saying " Anime-anime"? I'm confused...
(If you guys can think of some more "categories" please tell.)

I'm talking about in block buster, now the last time I was there, there was 1 category for anime, anime, then there was a thriller, comedy action, etc. Just like in Best Buy, there is only one big section for anime. The annoyance is that their ****ing mouths are either open or closed, mentioned by like 20 people. There are too much action shots, (the yelling while their hair blows and their eyes turn red or whatever), and those veins they have in their heads, WTF. And, ok I lost the"argument" about what 10 year olds like when it comes to disney classics, hell, I'd take any disney now over any adult-rated anime because I hate it that much, you people don't understand that liking anime is an opinion, I hate it, STOP ASKING ME WHY! The whole point of this thread was just to see how many people hated it, this wasn't for a discussion on it, good or bad.

I'm in the "I just can't like anime" class, but these boards exist solely for the purpose of discussion--not just giving yes/no answers.

You really are just an intolerant asshole, aren't you? You hate it because of their mouths and their veins? You hate it and you don't want to explain why, you just want to know how many people share the same hatred as you? Are you trying to start some sort of anti-anime underground army?

You obviously didn't read my other posts in this thread.

Reminds me of why a girl I knew in college said she hated Japanese animed films because `Their voices were all high pitched and winey` and then just went on to say how she hated listening to the Japanese language as a whole. She now lives in Eastern Europe (where their langauage is more tollerable).

Japanese is a lot better to listen to than Dutch.

I just rented Akira because of this thread. First anime rental of my life. If I hate it, I'm joing Sub's army.

Akira is famous, but it's hardly representative of the genre as a whole. I didn't like Akira, but I've liked all the Miyazaki movies I've seen.

Yeah, ditto. It started out interestingly enough but slowly degenerated into a senseless... thing. It wasn't bad, but it's definitely not something to "make or break" your introduction to anime.

Ditto, I'd definitely recommend anything Miyazaki over Akira. That was one of those movies where I just never did see what the fuss was about.

I used to like HSR a lot but lately it feels worn out. I haven't been there in a few months. And the last time I wore my Strong Bad shirt (I swear it was the last clean shirt I had) I got made fun of. So yeah.
