Ok, am I missing something here bostonherald is reporting that some people are complaining that Boston College has put up crucifixes and other religious statues over the past few months.

Boston Collage is a Catholic college run by Jesuit priests by the way.
“There is no choice if you don’t think it’s appropriate. You can’t turn it around,” said biology professor Dan Kirschner, faculty adviser for BC’s chapter of Hillel, a Jewish student group. “I think it is being insensitive to the people of other faith traditions here.”
I'm not catholic but if I go to a catholic school, I would expect to see catholic religious objects. I just don't understand why people are complaining about seeing these religious symbols when they knew full well what collage they're attending.

that's just silly. It's not a public institution, but a private catholic college. Were BU to pull that a) they'd be vandalized in seconds, and b) Hillel could complain.

I imagine this relates to the Catholic Church's more overall conservative turn under Benedict XVI. On this specific question, I don't take issue with it. It's rather like product branding, in a way.

I'd say that taking a job at the catholic church and then complaining about crucifixes at the workplace requires a lot of chutzpah.

I have no problem because if I opt to go to a catholic school, I expect to see catholic symbols. If you don't like seeing those symbols and have religious over tones, then choose a college that isn't part of the catholic church.

We should petition the management to put a Holy Steve at the top of every page.

However, the school is called "Boston College", not "Catholic University of Boston". It seems a little bit confusing when you go to this school and it turns out to be a Catholic school. The name certainly doesn't imply it's religious. The other official religious groups on campus also don't. They aren't advertising themselves as a Catholic school, so some may feel surprised when they see all the Plus Signs.

I'm not Catholic but I'd say one thing to the folks whining:

"Go find yourselves another fsking college you intolerant pricks".

Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

If you live in Massachusetts, or apply to college or visit their website you're presented with the fact. There's no way a person attending the college can claim ignorance. Right on their website they state
Boston College is one of the oldest Jesuit, Catholic universities in the United States. U.S. News and World Report ranks Boston College 34th among national universities.
The same could be said with Notre Dame in South Bend, it doesn't say anything about being a catholic school but it is.

Except for the name... Notre Dame.

I wonder if there's a Hillel chapter at Holy Cross.

Or a FCA chapter at HUC?
