I have just aquired a Slot Load 450mhz DVD iMac for my Sister.
It works great BUT there is an annoying high pitched noise eminating from the rear of the iMac when it is turned off. I have to turn off the power at the wall before it stops. When I turn off the power it makes a higher pitch noise before it fades away.
Does anyone know what the problem is here? I don't want to give it to my sister if it is about to die.

I've been told this comes from weak capacitors on the PAV board. It's possible the board is about to die.
Of course, the guy that told me this was full of BS. He never backed it up.

Really? Two days ago my iMac DV started to make a high pitch noise when I started it up and only loud music will get rid of it. Although, when i put it to sleep it disappears.

Go to http://www.apple.com/support and under iMac choose CRT iMac G3
There will be a list of problems you may have but most importantly a forum to find the solutions.
For the noise they think it is the hard drive causing the problem.
