I like the Narnia series, but C.S. was bit too much of a holy roller.
Friendship IS important to survival. How else could you exlain altruism? and <a href="http://cogweb.ucla.edu/EP/Selection.html" target="_blank">Kin Selection theory</a> ?

When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say "live and let live."
But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

I've seen it as..."Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create it). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival," but I can't tell you where it's from.

Why not just post the entire poem of Alice in Wonderland. <img border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" title="" src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" />

i believe this is it:
"I have no duty to be anyone's Friend and no man in the world has a duty to be mine. No claims, no shadow of necessity. Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival."
