I was wondering if they'd do this. Last year I picked up an iPod mini and an iBook on this deal (in Canada). However, the sale was already active when the iBook was announced.

I had a strong suspicion they'd start this program again this year because apparently it was quite successful last year, but I couldn't wait, considering I had already sold the iBook and had no laptop at all. Thus, I'm almost glad they don't have this deal in Canada. I wouldn't be surprised to see it show up in a few weeks here though.

Bummer man, I jumped too early too but then I'm not a student right now anyways. I'll be going back to night school this fall, but that means I don't have an valid student id, so even if waited I couldn't partake.

Still, you have to buy them both from Apple (or your campus store), which means no Amazon rebate and you also have to pay tax. So for people who were buying from Amazon, anyway, it's not that great a deal.

yeah since I got mine from MacMall I didnt have to pay taxes so the money saved would probably be negligible.... Plus I already have an iPod and technically I am not a student anymore :-)

Does anyone think there is a chance they'll do this in UK too? I doubt it somehow, they always know they can get lots of money out of us already.

i heart the bookstore i bought mine from...

i purchased it last week and am receiving it today. they are going to do a return on the purchase, re-ring a brand new receipt for the macbook + nano. And its out of state, so I didnt have to pay tax on any of the purchase

Yeah I remember the old deal, it came out right after I bought my iBook G4.
Sadly, the money's not here for a new MacBook, my iBook still works and hopefully it will last me another couple years.

Suckiest thing EVER.

Guess who ordered his MacBook on Wednesday (with EDU) and RECEIVED IT TODAY?

That's right, me.

I've e-mailed my Apple rep. If I got the thing today, and they don't let me get this rebate, I'm going to FREAK OUT.

I have a 4th gen iPod. Really want to use Nike+iPod. This free Nano would've made my wildest dreams come true...

Well if you just ordered it (and you didn't choose the BTO options), then you can return it and then partake of the deal.

In the scope of things I wouldn't call it the Suckiest thing ever either. There's worse problems that could befall you.

It's BTO. Ordered it Wednesday, got it today.

I consider it a $179 ripoff.

I too think Amazon deal is still better since no tax and $100 rebate. It's just you have to wait so dam long for them to ship this

Yeah that sucks, I wish they would do this when the machine is released so us early adaptors could get something extra for being a bit of a guinea pig.

I don't know if they'd be lenient on you, but last year I had ordered an iPod mini and an iBook on the same day... but separately. I called Apple and they confirmed it had to be on the same order, so I cancelled the two separate orders, and re-ordered both on the same order.

YMMV.

BTW, I'm a little bit surprised they put out the free iPod deal so early. I had kinda expected if they were going to have this at all, it would appear in late June or early July.

Why do they have to tempt me with this...
this discount would make that 60GB ipod video i want a mere $180...

but i still have a year warranty on my Powerbook, and there's no Photoshop UB yet...

must resist apple purchase temptation syndrome!!

Last I heard CS3 isn't hitting the streets until 2007 (second quarter I think). So no dice on that. While its a bummer, paying the restocking fee pretty much invalidates the free ipod deal.

anyways why tempt fate, if your machine is good, perfect even, your rolling the dice on getting a machine that may have mooing issues, or runs hotter, or a dead pixel (a or bunch of dead pixels)

Life is too short to sweat the small stuff. new deals are always in the pipeline, enjoy what you have.

Does anybody remember if there seemed to be any relation between the timing of this deal and the release of new iPods, last time around?

(hypothetical story incoming)
What if you ordered your MacBook a week before MacWorld San Fran, and they upgraded the processor from 2 GHz to 2.67 GHz, same price? Would it be a rip-off too?

Promotions and upgrades...nature of the business.

Yeah, it was right before they started selling the Nanos. They offered the iPod mini last time.

Well this offer is until september so I don't know if they want to give newly released products away for free.

If anything it smells like no new iPods till september.

Well, I had thought that the deal last year meant that new iBooks might not come out until the deal was over. Fortunately, that wasn't the case.

oh i know. i have the second to last gen 17" powerbook, and because i did BTO , i think it goes through a better inspection ( just speculating here )

I have had ZERO problems with my powerbook, it gets a bit hot under very heavy use, but then it cools down very promptly when i give it a moment to breathe.

i am very content with my laptop, i just ideally would like to get the macbook for its size. i would like a smaller laptop now that i have my g5 tower.

but like i've said before, until photoshop IS universal, i will not switch, plus, you never know, by that time hopefully th rev B macbook will be out, and i can get one of those.

Good grief.

You ordered a machine that you considered worth the money you were prepared to spend.

If it's no longer worth the money you were prepared to spend, you're an idiot for spending too much money.

Chances are, it still is, and you're not.

You missed a sale.

Life happens.

I bought my printer and apple care stuff last Sunday because i thought they had a MacBook in stock, but they told me come back on tuesday. in order to get the rebate for my printer i needed it on the same receipt with my MacBook.

Went to the Apple Store this morning explained what happened, so they refunded everything onto a giftcard and let me buy the macbook and printer along with a new ipod

I am now the proud new owner of a 60gig ipod for $220
in retrospect 30gigs would have been good enough, but it was way to cheap to resist

If the restocking fee is less than the cost of an ipod or you can argue away the restocking fee...go for it.

On behalf of the various people with sense around here, I would like to thank DavidC and jzfae for not insisting that Apple is absolutely morally obligated to give them free iPods. Y'all are a class act. Or two.
