Visit the tourist information booth at the Bangkok airport. You can talk to people on the plane.

And stay away from the children.

I'm confused...why would you go, I mean at the last minute?

Pattaya is definitely the worst place one could go in Thailand.

If you ever feel the Devil walking next to you, then run, do not walk, to the nearest golden cloister. You'll find a god there, and if you're lucky then the god's a she.

You are in Soviet Russia. It is dark. Grue is likely to be eaten by YOU!

Not the worst ... but certainly not the best.

It certainly has some questionable night-life activities, but those are easilly avoidable unless you simply don't want to.

My mom was born in Bangkok and lived there for her entire life until she moved to the States, so we go there every few years to visit her family. It’s kind of a dumpy place – I mean, it’s pretty much what you’d expect of a developing third-world country. One good thing though is that no matter where you go, the food is almost always excellent.

It’s probably too late, but if you can, get a reservation for one of the many islands – Phuket is apparently in good shape again (try to get one of the more sparsely-populated parts of the island – some parts of it are overly touristy). If being in a place that was so badly damaged like that kind of creeps you out, Ko Samet is a wonderful little island (incidentally, my mom and I were on that island when the tsunami struck – we and all the other tourists were watching CNN on just about the only TV there).

I personally like Chiang Mai, though maybe that’s just from visiting Bangkok too many times.

Whatever you do, good luck, and enjoy yourself.

Ditto on the food. It's also one of the only places I've visited where you can get food cheaper out than by cooking it yourself ... so long as you know where to look.

Phuket is amazing and yes, it has recovered but as Sage said, some of the outlying areas are still undergoing the repair process. If you really don't want to see the impact that the Tsunami had (2 years ago) then go to some of the islands in the gulf coast instead of the Andaman sea. Koh Samui is a popular tourist attraction and quite beautiful. Koh Chang (Elephant Island) is VERY peaceful, although the amenities there are quite sparse.

I'll also echo Sage's opinion on Chaing Mai. I went for the first time earlier this year. It's beautiful, quiet ... not so rushed as many other parts of the country. You might want to avoid if you get bored easilly though.
