I live in new zealand and am about to order a G5 1.6 i have checked several places and they quote me "The price for a G5 1.6 GHZ with the Radeon 9600 card will be
approximately $4599+GST" with the stock being priced at "$3,899+GST $4,386.38 incl. GST"
thats nearly $700 for a radeon 9600!
I have read most posts that say the FX5200 is s**t. Will the FX5200 still be alright for games?

Oni,

Good to hear from another NZ mac user. Yeah, I know, the prices suck over here. The FX5200 is not a terrible card but from what I've heard the Radeon toasts it. What's worse is that most semi-decent PC's over here have 9600's. I would say go with the low end to save money unless you know someone in the US who can send you stuff. The shipping price is always annoyingly high but last time I found a decent deal on a powermac it was still cheaper to get it shipped. you can usually find various ways to con your way out of paying GST. You might be able to find a decent price on a Radeon that way. Otheworldcomputing has the 9800 Mac Edition for US$387 which is almost as cheap as getting the NZ 9600 upgrade (its a 4x AGP card though). I get quite a bit of stuff through them.

Cheers for the advice I will probably stick with the FX5200 as I know a mate who is going to the states over christams and will get him to pick up the 9800. How much do you think I could sell the FX5200 for over here? (is it even usable in other machines?)

All I know is that PC versions are only around NZ$120-150 new. You'll have to sell it to someone who wants a mac card but as far as i know it should work in any powermac with an agp slot. It is an 8x card but should be backward compatible with agp 4x and 2x in G4's. I don't know about driver support though.

Are you sure you're not looking at the prices for the Radeon 9800? The Radeon 9600 is an extra A$99 in Australia, while the Radeon 9800 is A$660.
