When I delete e-mail messages, they just disappear. The trash folder remains empty. This happens if I hit the delete button, or the delete key on the keyboard, or right-click and move to trash. . .all the same. The mail just disappears.

Any ideas, anyone?

I've been through the Mail-Preferences-Accounts settings . . . that's not it. We've got the right options selected.

Thanks,

In mail, got to preferences, click on Accounts and then on special mailboxes. You will notice that there is a checkbox labeled: "Move deleted messages to trash mailbox." If you do not check that box then mail will erase your messages immediately, i.e. they will never go into your trash box.

I'm happy to report I figured it out. It was my Mom's G-4 iMac, and I don't know how it happened, but she was missing the "deleted messages.mbox" file, which is located in the user (name) - Library - Mail folder. I replaced the file with one copied from a working iBook, and -- presto.

Thanks for your help. I'd already known about the "Preferences, Accounts. . .etc." settings. We had been frustrated because we tried that a bunch of times, with no luck.

Anyway, my Mom's amazed I fixed her problem.
