Right, I've run out of disk space and it's time to get rid of all the superflous shite on my HD (Office, iApps, OS) and keep the good stuff (desktops, games, mp3s and, er... )

Seriously though, I've got fink and a whole bunch of associated pkgs that I'm not using, amounting to a couple-hundred megs that I'd like to get rid of without doing too much damage, which is why I want to know if I can delete the entire /sw/ directory.

If not, is there another easy way to do it?

Yes, it is safe to delete /sw, and this will remove all of fink and every package it installed. The only other thing to do is to remove "source /sw/bin/init.csh" from your .tcshrc file or wherever you have it.

Although Fink policy dictates that everything should install into /sw, there is one exception: XFree86. If you installed XFree86 through Fink, you will also need to delete /usr/X11R6 and /private/etc/X11. If you aren't sure, and still have Fink installed, try a 'fink list system-xfree86'. If that package is installed, it means Fink detected a previously existing installation and you should NOT delete the above-specified directories.

Thanks for the advice. After enabling root in NetInfo manager I downloaded TinkerTool to allow the Finder to show hidden files (after trying sudo rmdir sw and finding out I couldn't delete the directory because it wasn't empty!?! Ignorance is bliss.), logged in as root and deleted the ones you mentioned... thanks a lot!
