I'm up 820, I ordered 512 Ram and 1.4 GHz -- I'll wait to see if I have the 5400rpm HD and if 512 ram will do for my needs (which should be, since my 15 PB 1.5 only has 512 and it runs smoothly for the things that I do on it).

I think all the 1.4 come with the Toshiba 5400 RPM drive. I can't confirm that but I think since it comes with the larger drive it would be. Does anyone else with the 1.4 have the Toshiba drive too?

Eur 1100+ for a full blow mini. Funny I do not care how fast the HD is, at least it is as dead silence as my current iBook is...

Let's see -- $599 for the mini, $14 for a PS2->USB adapter. I swapped RAM with my Linux desktop machine to bring the mini to 512 (linux box down to 768). Purchased in tax free New Hampshire, so that means the total is currently at $613. Not too bad
Of course, though, I'm already planning on upgrading to 1gig or possibly 2gig later when they come down to a reasonable price, and I've been eyeing the 7200RPM hard drive upgrades as well. So, I'll be paying more eventually.

Heh, yeah.
To be honest, our second computer (a Dell P3 600 ) finally died ( ) so it was time to go 100% Mac in our house.
But with a 1-year-old Powerbook I just couldn't justify a new Powermac - yet. I'm not keen on the iMac because I want an independent and reusable display, and in a year or two I do want the Powermac. So the mini is the perfect interim solution.
Plus when I put it up for board approval I showed the wife two figures: (a) the cost of a loaded-up dual processor Powermac, plus screen; and (b) the loaded-up Mini, plus screen. Obviously she went for (b), *and* I got brownie points for choosing the bargain option. Now here's the really sneaky part: I'm locked into an upgrade path - now we're getting the screen, the next upgrade will have to be a Powermac. Otherwise we'd have wasted our money on the screen. And my wife can't plead ignorance, I made sure she's fully complicit in this decision.
I'm going straight to hell.

Nyarlaho, that's a good deal on the Dell display! How do you like it? It's the same resolution as their 17" model. Do you find the pixels to be noticeably large? I'm pretty impressed by recent Dell displays. My boss is considering either a 17" or 19". I told her they're the same resolution so she might as well get the cheaper one but she's leaning toward the 19" just for the size.

Ebay has some great deals on dell screens, my roommate ordered the higher end version of the 17in and with some discounts he got it for 320 shipped. I found the screen on ebay with a full warranty for less then 300 shipped.
So far on my mini I spent
600 For the 1.4 from a retail store
30 For a mac Keyboard
115 Ford an external 120 gig HD!!!
I'm looking to pick up a 17in LCD in a few weeks along with a stick of ram either a gig or 512...

Mintcake - haha that is quite the plan you have there... feel free to come talk my parents into buying me a new 23" display w/ a mini and I'll be your friend for life
BTW... the higher end dell screans are pretty nice. These are the Ultrasharp models (I know they atleast currently make an ultrasharp 17, 19, 20, and 20 wide). They might also make an 18 or did at one point... and make stuff bigger like a 23".

Dell 1905FP's were $400 at Hyper Microsystems (at least a while ago).
And about the resolution on 19 inchers: I actually prefer bigger pixels because I want text to be readable. So I'd take a 19 inch 1200x1000 over a 17 inch 1200x1000 (I also want an LCD to display on its native resolution).
Some will reply that you can increase text size without changing resolution--so I could be all set with a 17 incher on 1200x1000. However, changing text size across an OS gives odd looking results (with sizes of menus, the way text fits inside boxes, etc.). So I prefer the 19 incher.

Out of interest, why do most of you give the prices you paid WITHOUT tax?
Over here in Oz, by law the state tax has to be included in the RRP, so we always think of the complete price, including tax.
But if you're in somewhere like New York and you buy a $599 computer, you're paying more than 599 aren't you...
Just interested!

And in Canada the tax is 15%!! And its never included in the listed price. For a while (about 15 years ago), Zellers tried putting the price with tax in their fliers and on the stickers on items. It just made everyone elso look cheaper so they stopped that really fast!

 1.42 GHz
 256 RAM
 SD
 APX/BT built in
-> my university's discount price: $745
I'll take the base RAM and then go buy 1 GB DIMM at a local dealer. With all the money I saved on the third-party RAM, I'll buy a 7200 RPM disk and install it myself together with the RAM.
Now, where the hell will I find that putty knife with the ultra-thin edge? Buying myself a PowerBook and an 40 GB iPod for my g/f is easier than buying the darn knife. I think I'll put the mini on hold and get the other goodies first.

Well, as someone else said, sales tax is locally determined -- each state/county/city/town/whatever is free to set their own tax rate. If a store advertised with tax included, they would have to use multiple versions of their advertising for each area they sold in. So, it's just much easier to say $599 + tax, and figure up what the tax actually is at purchase time. For example, where I'm at, the tax rate is 5% -- which is very easy to figure up in your head. For bigger purchases, I usually head north to New Hampshire, where they have no sales tax.
I've been to parts of the US where the tax rate is as high as 12% and other parts where the tax rate changes from town to town. Definetly confusing at time.
Also, most mail order/internet purchases are tax free as well -- though there has been enough grumbling about this that I'm sure it won't last.

Well, yes, but let's not forget that in most of the US (and especially Canada) states/provinces are so big that tax tourism is impractical if not downright impossible. In Europe, where countries are so much smaller and so close together, the inclusion of sales tax in sticker prices encourages tax tourism and therefore encourages governments to tax competitively and/or companies to offer rebates according to market in order to iron out these differences. I see this as a good thing. The absence of tax in North American sticker prices no doubt originates with the problem you describe, but it's perpetuated by companies who want to keep the sticker price down and don't mind deceiving the consumer to do so.
The number of times I've heard people in Europe moan how they're being ripped off by comparison with Americans/Canadians, when the price difference is almost entirely due to tax being left off the sticker price.
Note also that internet purchases in the EU are charged at a flat rate of 21% sales tax regardless of country of residence/purchase. This was inevitable - it's just a pity they decided to harmonise 'up' rather than 'down'.

Since a couple of years. And what's stupid about it? Makes sense to have harmonised sales tax across the EU. You can argue about the amount levied, but there are reasons - it's not stupid. Nor are Europeans. I should know, I'm one of them.

It amazes me that people spend so much money on large displays, but not the CPU...
IMHO, that combination doesn't make a lot of sense.
An 20" iMac would have been cheaper and much more powerful.

The display is the interface you view all of the time. It amazes me that it's the other way around. So many gear heads buy these wicked fast computers to surf the internet and send email. Then they try to cram several windows in, or watch DVDs on a 17" (or smaller) display because they spent all of their money on the computer. THAT'S what doesn't make sense, IMO.
BTW, I'm happily using my 23" Cinema Display with the mini's 32MB VRAM and it works great! I don't need anything faster for a little Photoshop and GoLive work; surfing and emailing. The mini is PLENTY fast.

why should it amaze you? why not get a calculator and add the price of a dvd player/burner, hd tv screen, and similarly speced computer and see how you come out.
it makes perfect sense - 3 in one. and each one is the bomb diggity. plus - putting money now on the display opens the door for me to make the switch.
the imac is illogical because it's imobile, whereas the mini is logical as a portable desktop...very logical.
so while i'm at it why not use the money left over toward getting the best display i can, for when i want to display things the best i can?
