Hey all, I have to put together a PC box for some stuff I just can't get for the Mac (HDRShop to name one) I'm going to buy it this week, I have two systems picked out, a P4 system, and an Athlon system. Which chip would be better and why? I plan on running some high-end 2-D apps on the box as well, with a lot of RAM/HD space, I'm looking at an XP 2400 and a P4 2.4 GHz.
Thanks for your input.
Cheers,
raferx

Athlon. Killer.

I'm building abox also... A7N8X/MCP-T/SPP with an Athlon XP2100 (1.73GHz).

The P4 blows.

Quite honestly, I think it is just personal preference at that speed range. The prices aren't too much out of line with each other.

Indeed, it's not so much the CPU, but just about everything else in the box. People tend to get all worried about the CPU, but IMO, it's the rest of the components that makes the machine, not the CPU.

A fast CPU with sh!tty parts makes for a sh!tty PC. A medium speed CPU with good parts makes for a more pleasant Windoze experience.

Agreed. I plan using an MSI or Giabyte motherboard, 1.5 ~ 2 gigs of PC 2100 DDR RAM, GF440MX or Radeon, 80 gig HD, lots of cooling and a 100Mbit LAN card. I'd love an MP, but I'm not going to spend that much for a Windoze experience yet...
