Holy crap! Cocoa apps support non-contiguous text selection in Tiger!

Try it out! Select some text, then hold down Command and select something else! Or, hold down the Option key and drag a rectangular selection!

Yes, but you can't do anything with the text after you've selected it--can't copy, cut, paste or delete.

In Tiger it does. Go to Disk Utility-->Preferences.

Huh? I can do all of those things in this very text field that I'm typing this message into.

Did you even try this?

I tried it in Pages, since that is a recent Cocoa app (at least I think it is).

You're right, CharlesS, at least it does work in Word. But that's a Carbon app. I don't understand why it doesn't work in Pages.

Hmm, I don't have Pages, so I can't test that (well, I suppose I could install the trial version that came with Tiger, but I'm lazy). It works great when I try it in TextEdit and Safari, though...

You can place as many clocks on your desktop in dashboard as you want.. for that matter I believe the same is true of the other widgets.

Has anyone else noticed how the red second hand on Tiger's clock widget "bounces" like a real clock on the wall?

Look at it carefully... especially in the AM with a white clock face.

I haven't scoured the thread to see if this has already been posted, but hit Command-Control-D as you hover over a word in Safari 2.0 and you get a slick little pop-up dictionary

It has been mentioned, but it's awesome enough to deserve another. It isn't just in Safari, either.

I sure like the new control-click -> Slideshow commands for graphics files. In the Finder. Preview has a similar thing. I was thinking that it used to be easier to do this in Windows XP, that has a Slideshow command in Windows Explorer.

Now I think the Mac does it easier. Woot!

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but you can change the order of the results delivered by Spotlight by dragging a category in the Spotlight system preference search result tab.

Weird drop-down menus Apple has decided to use there. Does Mail get the 'King of Inconsistency' award?

What Mac do you have? I plugged mine into a PowerBook G4 1.25GHz that I have at work and it was there. I don't have Tiger on my mini yet so I don't know if it shows up on that system or not.

My F kets are always flaky on my PB G4 1.5, for example I set the dashboard to go off of Command F1 and went to do it, nothing! I think with the multi-role of the F keys on the laptop, its a problem.

I found something and have 2 questions if anyone is nice enough to help. From the desktop when I click the Finder menu and select "Services" there's a Chinese text converter. Are there other language text converters or did I do something wrong during my Tiger installation?

Second question, has anyone noticed that iCal no longer changes the date in the dock when opening the app? It just stays at the default (July 17th).

Did you move your Dictionary app to somewhere other than the Applications folder? I like to keep my Applications folder tidy so I put it in a subdirectory "Accessories" and that broke it for me.

Nope. I just tried it in another account, however, and it works. It must be something I have installed in my account. Now, to find out what..

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 with the fx5200 Just tried it straight into the DVI port also, it was plugged into a converter for the ADC socket previously, made no difference.

I can't wait to try Tiger but booho, I 'm stuck for now. My backup system is dependent on Retrospect by Dantz and they say that you can't backup a Tiger OS machine until they come out with a new client...

the dictionary look up does NOT work in All apps, i would like to say it works in all cocoa apps, but then it doesn't work in the terminal, and i believe that to be a cocoa app..

$ otool -L /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app/Contents/MacOS/Terminal
/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app/Contents/MacOS/Terminal:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Cocoa.framework/Versions/A/Cocoa (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 11.0.0)

*sigh*.. i knew it was too good to be true.. fortunately most of the time i use it in safari, it simply rocks (though i wish it was more instant, for me i sometimes am not sure if i press the right keystrokes cuz it could take up to a second or two to display)..

I won't swear that this wasn't in Panther, but...

Occassionally I like to look at the mail headers to see at what time it was transmitted and what servers it went through. This is not displayed by default, but turning on full headers showed a bunch of other stuff and took up a lot of room.

There is now a preference under viewing to do a custom header detail. I simply added "Received" to the list and I get only the extra header that I want. The interface is completely non-intuitive, though. To figure it out, I turned on all headers and then looked at the names of the other ones. I then hit the plus to add one to custom and typed in the name "Received". No auto-fill or anything to let you know you are on the right path, but it worked!

iCal has some new features (excuse me if some of these are old - I don't look at my diary much!)
- Calendar Groups
- A Birthdays Calendar that is auto-generated by your AddressBook (Off by default)
- A Notifications View (where the "mini months" are.)

The dock has gained a couple of new menu items - "remove from login items" and "Start at login"

Script Editor's Dictionary Viewer is totally different (and improved).

Tiger Chess - now allows you to have a board of grass and furry pieces.

That freaked me out the first time I saw it. I thought the seconds hand was buggily bouncing, but realized it was an effect to simulate a real clock. haha

Fixed: When you drag attachments from mail app directly to your desktop, it no longer sets the files as READ-ONLY. Thanks, Apple! Wahoo!

Shortcut: In spotlight results, if you arrow down through the listed files, pressing the right arrow expands out the selected file's details. Left arrow collapses extended details.

Launch Dictionary.app. Open preferences. Then set it to display results in a panel rather than the app. That is what enables the keystroke command to function.

Uncheck "open safe files after downloading" in safari. The side effect is that you'll have to double-click these manually to have disk utility open them.

I think somebody else noticed that the weather for Phoenix is actually Phoenix, NY, not AZ. You might want to check that.
