Is anyone experiencing unusual behavior when using OpenDNS and Safari?
In the past, if we entered 'example' into the Safari address bar we would be taken to 'example.com'
But lately OpenDNS seems to kick-in and take us to their proprietary search page unless we specifically add the .com
Thread at their forum:
OpenDNS Community > Forums > Redirecting to OpenDNS Search, not auto-.com...?

it may be adding it because you have it as a bookmark or in your history, which makes domain.com the first hit & highlighted.
If you are just typing in a non-history, non-bookmarked item like randomsite, Safari shouldn't add the .com.

I made sure my test was with a non-bookmarked/history items
The .com WAS added when not using OpenDNS.

I've been researching and some users report that it began happening after upgrading to Snow Leopard. What OS are you running on your problem machine?

Ethernet directly to DSL modem.
DNS entered directly into DSL modem and also specified in Network prefs.

IIRC OpenDNS never ads .com. So if Safari doesn't supply it, OpenDNS will take you to their search site rather than to the .com domain. I always thought that was a somewhat lame way to make money off regular users.
