^^ That's quite exaggerated. Three FBI logos? No. And nobody plays trailers after you press "Play".

Yeah, Blu-Ray menus suck, but DVD menus aren't any better.

My disney BR disks force me through trailers. 9 min worth actually. Doesn't seem exaggerated to me at all, I see it all the time.

Yes DVD's equally suck but all this talk about how BR was going to make viewing EASIER didn't pan out so well.

on a PS3...

IF main menu button doesn't take you right to where you can select play movie from the menu, the next chapter button moves through the trailers. i've NEVER watched a trailer ever, and i have just over 200 blu-rays...worked on every single one of them. yeah, extra button pushes. but are you guys saying you WATCH/wait for them? no f'n way.

I love my Pioneer Elite DVD player. Not only is it region free, makes no annoying sounds, and no annoyingly bright LEDs (I can even adjust the brightness on the soft, amber display), but it has a nifty feature where I can set the start and stop for any DVD; that includes skipping any and all warnings, trailers, and ads. It kicks ass. Best DVD player I've ever owned.

Ya so the bright side is you can mash the next button when you see it isn't the movie about 10-20 times.

And no on some you cannot skip you can only FF. Most actually.

Ha ha, go ahead... use that ignore button (although I'll lose sleep over it)! That way you can live in denial and not have to handle the fact that I say you have to push the button 10 times to start a BR disk.

I'll even test it for you tonight

Has anyone heard of any rumors as to when Apple will include BR players in their machines? Sorry if this has been discussed in the last 164 pages. Unfortunately I didn't have time to swift through them

Apple's own professional authoring software doesn't even support blu-Ray yet.

DVD Studio Pro - no.

Final Cut Studio - yes.

So Apple's own professional editing software *does* support BD, while it's disk authoring software does not. A mixed message and not conclusive.

Unless you're trying to make it look conclusive.

Ok so I just put in Bond Casino Royal on BR. Took 8 button presses once the disk started to get to the movie. Some were skipable, some not. Top menu did not work and I had to hit skip, skip, skip, skip, enter, skip, skip, skip. I also had to go back and change my audio input to the uncompressed one as sadly the damn things are smart enough to automatically know what you can handle.

I was shocked at how fast this one was and that's sad.

You have to blame the disc author for all this. They do the same crap on DVDs. I hate it. I paid to view the movie not all the damn previews.

Yup like I said just as bad as DVD's. Yes the company is to blame so if they are wondering why sales are down here is one of the answers. Treat your customer like your bitch and a criminal after you take their money.

Oh and I lied. Turns out after 8 button presses they tack on another 2 company logo thingamajig for 20 second within the opening chapter. Sneaky ****s.

i saved myself the trouble and downloaded a 8 gig BR rip with DTS audio and there wasn't a single flaw in it.

I hate double dips so I will buy it next year when it is 3D.

I'm not interested in the 3D, but would have much preferred to have the extras on the current 2D version, particularly about how the movie was filmed.

As such, I still haven't bought it. Maybe if it drops to $20 somewhere I'll run out and pick one up. In the meantime I'm in no big rush.

My Samsung BD-P1000 wouldn't play it because the firmware upgrade only allowed Avatar to play via HDMI, my setup still uses component. My PS3 played it flawlessly.

There are about 1 million places you can see that right now for free. Wired, youtube. etc.

I found a nice 45 min long HD one in your favourite format flash for ya:
Exclusive 45minute Making of Avatar

Considering that most behind the scenes footage on BR and DVD disks are either SD or DVD quality at best I say it isn't worth paying or waiting for.

I remember saying for years that samsung DVD players are shit cuz of the buggy firmware and I got plenty of heat for it.

Seems they proved my case again. How many average users will figure out how to update their BR drive when a disk doesn't play.

Lets hope they got it connected to the net or know how to burn ROM updates to DVD.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Actually, lately a lot of them have been partially in HD. Not that it matters for HD video, but it does look better, and intercut HD footage from the film looks good with it.

That's not surprising considering relatively inexpensive home camcorders and dSLRs now even support HD (or at least much better than SD quality) these days.

Well, it's not just Samsung. It's multiple brands in the case of Avatar apparently.

I have a samsung BD player hooked up with HDMI... it did play but with no audio...

I downloaded the firmware off the samsung website and popped it on a flash drive, plugged it into my BD player and ~5 mins later we watched it...

if the player was connected to the internet it would have downloaded it and played it on it's own.

Granted but Samsung always seems to have their own issues as well.

I remember 6 years ago people were paying fortunes for their high end up-converting DVD players. They had ROM flaws that crushed blacks down to a mess and they wouldn't play many protected DVD's like the star wars one over component. It took them almost a year to fix it and even then it wasn't great.

The super sad part the next model a year later had the same problem again plus more.
It's just a damn DVD player and an expensive one at that! Sigh.

My Samsung DLP TV was also a train wreak.

Specs and sales be damned. I am never buying samsung again and just cuz they sell well doesn't mean they are quality, just cheap.

DVD players had problems with "new" encryption schemes on new discs, especially Disney discs. This is old news. It's just easier to fix nowadays.

Analogue, I'm sorry your Samsung DLP TV wasn't fun, but frankly I would never buy DLP in the first place. Every single one I ever saw demoed had issues with brightness face on and horrible drop off of brightness at just a few degrees away from dead center. On the other hand, my Samsung 7000-series LED TV is neither cheaply made nor "crap." It has a great picture, it handles dynamic range very well, and it's a great fit for my room.

Yeah, my friends had to send their 2nd gen Toshiba DVD players for firmware updates. That said my 1999 el cheapo RCA worked fine for a decade. It just didn't support DVD-R.

Yeah, I've avoided DLP like the plague - partially because of rainbows (at that time). However, his problems were not due to DLP per se. They were due to severe video delay IIRC.

I don't know, I have to agree with you aS on this one. I have quite a lot of Samsung stuff around the house... a LCD, upconverting DVD player, etc. and it all seems to stop working correctly just after the warranty goes out. The DVD player stopped sending audio out over HDMI and the LCD makes a (disturbing) buzzing sound. I also used to have a 32" Samsung HDTV, but the main board went out after 3 months and it was replaced within warranty. I sold the new on BNIB on Craigslist and bought a Sony Bravia... no issues there. I seem to remember a Consumer Reports article talking about shoddy quality with both Samsung refrigerators and BR players.

Well, true in some cases.

AppleCare is really a good purchase IMO. I love it because it's hassle-free. I wish more manufacturers offered easy to purchase and use extended warranties. For example, Sony offers one, but if you want it, they just give you a list of about 6 phone numbers to call. Seriously?

I love my PS3 and I've never played any games on it. I use MediaLink to play all the stuff on my iMac on my HDTV/stereo as well as play the blurays and upscaled DVDs

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I have to confess as well, that the primary reason i purchased a PS3, and it's primary use is as a media player. I really like the product and it's the best one i could find at this price point for a media box (Sorry Apple, i held off as long as i could).

I do have a couple of games (Braid, MotorstormPR and Uncharted), but i dont play them all that much. the gaming side of the PS3 is akin to my Wii mostly.

Cheers

We use our PS3 about 5% for games and the rest for media, DVD, and Blu-ray watching. I purchase TV shows from Sony in the Playstation Store because we only have an antenna and there are a few shows I like to watch that I can't receive otherwise.

Where and under what conditions did you see the DLPs demoed? Were they just in the store? Stores are notorious for TVs being set to their brightest for fear that they'll be overlooked among all the other TVs there. Or if in other people's homes, were they calibrated properly?

If calibrated properly, a DLP rear projection TV can look great. At the time I bought mine (a Samsung 6 series, btw), LCD TVs didn't have LED backlights and colors were still "washed out" and the few that had "10,000:1" contrast ratios were doing it with software that only simulated that range (when you looked at the box there were starred lines that said "actual contrast ratio 3,000:1" or something). Some probably still use weird tricks, but they've gotten much better at doing it.

When I bought my DLP TV, I wanted something that would give me true blacks (most LCDs at the time gave you various shades of gray that they called "black"). Out of the box, with no adjustment of the controls I had the issues you did with brightness. Playing with the controls myself only gave me a marginal improvement.

But then I bought this disc from Amazon, and spent an evening following the on screen instructions (and using the provided color filters) calibrating the TV. The result was amazing. Colors look great, blacks are black, and the screen isn't too bright. It's got a decent viewing angle, too.

My TV only has one color wheel, so I do get the "rainbow effect," but it's not all that noticeable to me.

A screen that is too bright should have the least fall off when viewed off its central axis, right? Fall off is the biggest problem I've had with viewing DLPs-I get just a little away from centered on the screen and the picture loses detail, brightness and crispness. To me, this issue with viewing angle is not worth the savings that can be had by buying a DLP screen.

$30 for a new release movie at home? Studios think you'll pay
Three major movie studios are considering a deal with cable operators to offer recently released movies to viewers before they hit DVD. In Demand CEO Bob Benya is the one who revealed the plan, saying that Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Walt Disney were trying to work out the details with his company, as well as Cox Communications, Comcast, and Time Warner.

The movies wouldn't exactly be cheap, though—the current figure being bandied about is $30 per showing in the comfort and convenience of your own home. The upside is that the films would be available for willing viewers months before the typical on-demand period (though they would still not see a simultaneous release with theaters).
I don't know where put this. These guys are still stupid.

It makes sense price-wise vs. the theater if it's a family or something watching at home. But...

The studios are interested in finding that sweet spot where they can take advantage of viewers who don't like the theater, but also want to see a movie soon after it comes out.
Yeah, that is exactly nobody.

If it's a family or if you have a really nice set-up. I would think most people would rather go to the theater or own the likely cheaper blu-ray.

Edit: Yeah, Netflix has shown most people would rather wait the extra 30 days just for streaming versus a disc.

iTunes has had Freakonomics and Monsters available for $9.99 SD and $10.99 HD rentals before they get to the cinema. Here in NYC $10.99 is cheaper than a ticket to the cinema so I've been renting them.

I'd much rather watch a movie at home as opposed to going to the cinema.

Yeah, but fortunately for the people who pirate movies, this'll make things a loteasier. Now people will get a clean, HD copy of a current release movie which'll end up on BitTorrent.

…where the watermarking embedded in the movie will have the FBI knocking at the door of the guy who put it online…

You mean at the door of the guy he was stealing cable from.

blu-ray is common sense.

You take a red beam, shrink its wavelength, and that increases your density.

Optical media disintegrates quickly at sub-390nm, so blu-ray is your cutoff.

Oh, and... it's not blue, it's violet. I guess "violet ray" didn't go over too well with the marketing team, but whatever, common sense otherwise.

I'd much rather watch a movie at home as opposed to going to the cinema.

I don't understand the reply-question but I'd much rather watch at home too, not only because it's cheaper and more convenient and not crowds or idiots to deal with but also because the picture and sound seems better. I only have a 42" 720 with an old stereo plugged into a playstation3, but having the picture scaled down into a rectangle 3 feet wide that's 8 feet away and totally within my field of view looks sharper and brighter than at the theatre where it's stretched out 50 feet wide, 100 feet away and projected with a dim bulb that the cineplex is squeezing the last few hundred hours out of. I've noticed that I definitely see details of stuff at home, such as expressions on distant faces, that's really not visible at the theatre thru it's darkened blur.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Depends on the theatre. My local theatre only charge CAD$10.xx but the image quality on the usual screens generally sucks. The 2K digital theatres look much better. Blu-ray on my projection screen looks great too, but that doesn't help me if it's a new theatre release. The best I've seen so far though is IMAX Dark Knight which looked totally awesome, and significantly better than the Blu-ray version. But that's because the opening scenes were actually shot on IMAX.

For a nice quiet documentary, the theatre experience adds absolutely nothing IMO though.
