I created a password protected .dmg rather late at night and now I have completely blanked on the password I used. I know it was something really clever but what?
Anyone know anyway to rescue my data?

I really don't think so. If it were breakable, the FileVault feature of Mac OS X would be worthless.

The CIA might be able to break into it. Bets you can hope for is to not think about it for a bit and hope it comes back to you in time.

Are you sure the password has not been stored in your keychain?
Worth a look.

If it's not in the Keychain (it shouldn't be, from a security standpoint, but Apple puts it there by default anyway) then I'm afraid you're probably hosed.
Do you have a set of passwords that you use often? Try all of those; you may have used one of them. Again, not terribly desirable from a security standpoint, but common practice. Other than that, I'm afraid I don't know what to tell you.
It's times like this that strong emcryption can cut both ways. No one without the password can get in, but they really do mean no one.

Don't lose hope yet - but use another computer for now while you find the answer.
Then look up how to search your swapfiles - passwords sometimes get stored there. There is also an invisible file that caches stuff including passwords. Go to macosxhints.com and do a search there. I remember once being surprised finding my login password somewhere in the innards.
Good luck!
