Saw this on The View today.

I intensely dislike Bush, but he's failed to erase the respect I have for the position of President of the United States.
The time for this is after he leaves office.
God. I hate having to agree with Elizabeth.

Yeah, even if it were an accurate portrayal and not some blown out of proportion hit piece (which is what the trailer makes it look like) - the time for it is AFTER he leaves office. Rushing to get it out before simply looks spiteful and petty and I think that will hurt it at the box office.
I think that there are ways Stone could get across his political points without making them so obvious. I think that really good art makes us ask questions without passing judgement or giving us the answers. I'm not sure Stone is capable of that these days.
Regardless of the content, Brolin though seems to have nailed the role, given what you could see in the trailer.

I can't imagine why anyone would want to see this. But I have to ask this:

The entire Clinton presidency must have driven you crazy. His presidency began and ended as one big, detailed investigation into his sex life, culminating in the film "Primary Colors" before he left office.
But really, my biggest question is this: You watch The View?

This movie proves that liberals hate America, freedom, and our troops, and they want Osama Bin Laden to win the war on terror and kill all our babies.

Well, it drove me crazy for lots of reasons, but I have to note three things:
1) Much of the investigation into his sex life had to do with what he did in office. If Bush was driving the Caddy on the lawn while he was President, that would be a different story.
2) Nichols and May paid lip service to the notion of filing off the serial numbers (though as an aside, I have it on pretty good authority that the character played by Larry Hagman was Paul Tsongas).
3) Related to two, Nichols and May are a class act, while Stone is an asshole and a liar. We can debate Primary Colors (which would be cool, because it's a relevant comparison and I ****ing love that movie), but I can make a pretty good argument N&M had respect for the office and the man.
I don't know about you, but I came away from that movie liking Clinton more.

I don't really take Oliver Stone too seriously, and I'm convinced most movie-watchers don't either. I'll probably watch this regardless, though.
I do wish that he'd waited another year before pushing this movie; it makes it seem like just another election year flick meant to push voters a little further left.
Maybe it is.

While on the other end of the spectrum, just by waking up in the morning James Cromwell has an order of magnitude more gravitas than Bush 41. He's Jack Bauer's dad for Christ's sake!
Seeing Brolin throw that petulant look at him... I half expected the Elder Bush to calmly get out of his chair and cave in sonny's skull with the Oval Office desk lamp.

Even Michael Moore realized that was a mistake.

Me too.
You bring up some good points as to why "W." isn't the same as "Primary Colors" and I'll add a few.
A. Comparison between Stone and Nichols. 'Nuff said.
B. While it was clearly a movie about Clinton, they went ahead and did the honest thing and changed the names to protect the innocent just as the book did. That way they really can't be faulted for the "artistic license" they took with the story. If you make up the names and change the characters around, you can't be seriously faulted for deception.
C. The movie was overall a pretty positive spin on the election of Bill Clinton. It was an attempt to illustrate who he was and why he did things in a way that would allow the audience to empathize with him. It wasn't a negative spin looking to whack a sitting President in the knees right before he leaves office.
The whole comparison based on "class" just rings so true in this instance.
Never the less, I'm tempted based on Brolin's obvious mastery of "the smirk" alone. :lol

Oliver Stone has a penchant for just making stuff up. Also, this doesn't seem well-cast. Why not Will Ferrell as W? I'm kind of meh at this point.

Wow, you're right! After learning about this movie, I personally invited Osama bin Laden to come kill my children while I watched! I hate America THAT much. I think I'll risk an infraction and call you a complete f***ing idiot.

After being taken in by JFK ( I admit it ) I'm more than a bit weary of Stone. He does have a way of just making things up and presenting his inventions as major plot points, not just minor artistic license to tell a story. Stone is like an artist trying to paint on pinheads with a brick.

I disagree with you. The office of the presidency needs nor deserves no respect. He's just a civil servant.
This film, however, looks horrible. Some of the parts look terribly miscast and Oliver Stone is a doofus.

The office isn't a "he" it's an "it".

So far, with the exception of my James Cromwell comment, everyone seems to disagree with you, and is far more overwhelmed with how perfectly Brolin has been cast.
Even if Cromwell is miscast, I can't deny it's an interesting choice.

Sorry, I was apparently shifting gears too rapidly. I said the office deserved no undo respect, and then to highlight that the office should not be considered at all sacred, I pointed out that Bush, its current holder, was just a civil servant. I didn't think that was confusing at the time. (kinda still don't)
Anyway, I didn't mean to imply that the miscasting--and I don't want to rewatch the trailer to pick out which ones struck me that way--was the reason it looked terrible. It just looks stupid and exploitive to me. I may not care for Bush, but I don't trust Oliver Stone to give us anything resembling an insightful look into the man. Look what he did to Alexander the Great, for Pete's sake. He turned him into a simpering whiner--Alexander the @#$%ing Great!

Sorry if I was terse. I was frustrated in trying to make the decision "do I answer to what I think he means, do I answer to what he could mean... aw **** it, let him clarify it."
I should have just asked for clarification straight off the bat.

In answer to both of you, I'm not talking about massive deference to the position. I'm basically saying that I would like the position to be above people smearing the occupant's pre-office life. This isn't to say his pre-office life shouldn't be investigated, that's news, but I highly doubt this movie contains any startling revelations. It's all stuff we already know, tarted up to go with popcorn.
What he's done while in office is a different story. Plenty of things to smear him about there. Why not a war movie Ollie?
I'm not even saying these things are off-limits, just that one's point can be made without taking a **** in the guy's brainpan.
I mean, I know this is Pol/War, but we are still capable of that, right?

Mr. Stone’s film will obviously not be…
Anyway, I don’t know about anyone else here, but I got a kick outta seeing the President at the Olympics. He fulfilled his role as cheerleader for the US in exemplary fashion.
