How is the existing Powerbook G4 really? When was it least upgraded, and how much? Is this "old" technology?

in terms of product lines, the 15" is brand new. it's the first 15" aluminum powerbook. the 12" and 17" are each almost a year old but have been upgraded recently. i'm using one of the first 12" powerbooks and it certainly doesn't feel like old technology to me.

the 12" powerbook seems to be a modified iBook but it doesn't lose anything for it. the ppc architecture has been around since like 1994 but it's a good one. the G3 has been around since '97, the G4 since '99. the G5 is out (for desktops), but the G4 isn't "antiquated" or anything.

in terms of "old" technology, some of the numbers may not match up with pc's (MHz, mostly) but the performance is very good and many people (myself included) much prefer the OSX interface which is a very modern operating system (as opposed to the dos-extentions, windows). OSX has roots in nextstep, a steve jobs OS that started in about 1995 (i think) but certainly isn't outdated.

the last powerbook upgrade was in september, an upgrade for all three.
hopefully i've covered what you're looking for.

This was also talked about on Your Mac Life radio show yesterday. And I believe they are right when they said that the G4 still has a lot of life left in them. I won't be suprised if Apple will stay with it and push it to 2 Ghz. But... of course, I still would rather have the G5 because of it's 64 bit chip.

12" - 867 MHz to 1.0 GHz
15" - 867 MHz/1.0 GHz to 1.0/1.25 GHz
17" - 1.0 to 1.33 GHz

15" got firewire 800 (only had firewire 400 before). all models got usb 2.0 (had usb 1.1 before).
17" already had firewire 800. 12" still only has firewire 400.

*firewire 800 is twice as fast as firewire 400. 800 and 400 are the maximum transfer speeds in Mb/sec (megabits per second, not megabytes per second which is the megabits divided by 8).
