All your *linux* belong to us!!!
Seriously, its just a geek thing to do. There are some people who just want to see linux running on anything they can get their hands on. In the year 2024 psychologists will have a name for this disorder.
Anyone wanna coin the term now?

I wanna see Linux run on my Casio calculator watch, or maybe my Atari 2600. Now that would be l337!

Actually if there was a small footprint Linux for iPod that played more media formats (i.e. WMP, Ogg, etc.) then that would be *very* nice.
Personally though I suspect a non-Linux OS like TRON might be a bit better. I wonder if anyone has thought about all this. The downside is Apple's encrypted AAC files which might be a bear to support. I've never downloaded from iTMS but I know many have.

Other possibilities include wider support for memory card readers (unavailable at all until just recently), as well as some more PDA type of functionality. If the iPod API had been open-source, this stuff would have been out MONTHS ago.

assuming people made the hardware and/or converters for it...
i see the point of having a project, but it really doesn't do any good for the common user right now. that was my point - if you're not developing, i find myself wondering why.
of course, to be 1337 is a good enough reason for me :c) it's why i modded out my pc.

Yum. OK, maybe it's not a perfect realization, but it's easily within Apple's grasp to make a functional computer in the volume of the largest iPod (my 2G 20GB iPod is zaftig). Not a high-performance one like the TinyPC line <snerk> but something that can act as a storage device for my photos and DV, read and write text on (chord keyboards anyone?), and perhaps even play Doom on. Ha I fastforwarded that monster good!
It's unfortunate that Apple decided to go with iPods too slim to use FW ports. We'll see wha they do with it.
