I had a major problem last night which forced me to reinstall. I had installed more memory (thats not the problem, i tested it in 9.1 before going back to X) and when i was in X, i had two kernel panics within 5 minutes of each other. So i rebooted each time. When i did, the second time, all my applications showed up as folders. I could not launch anything. I ended up having to wipe the drive and reinstall everything. What exactly happened? anyone have any idea? Its like the finder lost its interpretation method or something, cause all my applications were named something like fire.app but showed up as folders. Anyone else see this?
I have a G4 400, 512mb ram, x and 9.1 on the same partition.

I heard somewhere that the files LSApplications, LSSchemes, LSClaimedTypes somehow affect this. They are located in ~/Library/Preferences ... (tilde means your home directory.)
Corrupted files...
I don't remember what the next step was...perhaps moving them or deleting them...back them up first.

I had a similar problem after a Kernel panic while starting up Classic. All my applications showed up as folders or documents. Thank goodness, deleting the three LS files mostly solved the problem.
Having a kernel panic in OS X and then having all your apps turn into folders is like loosing your virginity. Never again will I look at the Mac OS in the same innocent way that I used to.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.
