How do I play AVI files?

Hi guys,
Is there any way to play AVI files on my powerbook?
Every time I try to open a file in quicktime it gives me a message telling me I need the proper codec. Then it proceeds to go online and check for an update, but never finds one.
I also have Windows Media Player for osx and os9, but neither will open an AVI either.
Can anyone help me out?

This is really a Multimedia & DV question, but here goes...
AVI is simply a container. It can contain media in any one of several formats or codecs (just like QuickTime .mov files). If you open the file in QuickTime, you can get info on it and you should be able to find out what the codec is, even if you can't view it.
If neither QuickTime nor Windows Media play the file, it may be a DivX file.

For the most common .avis you need the three indeo codecs (search at Apple's software site for download) and the DivX, which you get here.

What version of Windows Media Player do you have? You'll need 6.3 for use with DivX player (same link as above? I'm not sure... http://mac.divx.st).
Anyway, get those two things and you'll be able to play most. Also get the Indeo codecs as suggested; not the latest one, but all three. They're different.

The latest version of DivX doesn't need WMP nor DivX-Player. It plays directly in Quick Time.

Okay, I installed the Divx codec for QuickTime and now I'm able to see the video but I still can't hear the audio. One of the tools I've been using told me that it couldn't handle translating Windows Media Audio. My goal is to be able to play these Divx movies directly in the QuickTime player or translate them into the QuickTime format. Can anyone help me figure out how to get the audio to decode? Thanks.

Hi guys,
I too have installed all of the indeo codecs and the divx codec. I still can't play avi's in quicktime or wmp. All I get is audio, but no video.
I have tried it both in X and in 9. Can anyone help me?

Yeah, that's the software that gave me the error message. What it's saying specifically is this: "No Mp3 Audio -- Could not handle Windows Media Audio!"
Thanks for your help, please let me know if there is some other tool or some workaround which will allow me to decode the Windows Media audio.

I think you're out of luck - I don't think there's a way to play a divx that uses windows media audio format.

Just buy a PC , they aint that bad ! At least you aren't cut off from the rest of the world unlike us mac users..
no avi, no .exe , no decent games , rip-off hardware , buggy os etc..

He is right that pirating is easier on Windows.
<edit> Oh, and by the way, it's best just to stick with .mpg (and .mov where you can find it, of course). If you can't find enough MPEGs on something like LimeWire, you can just go to some pirating channels on the bigger IRC networks, like Undernet or EFnet.
