is there a way to determine how much traffic a website gets? - the website is not my own.

Alexa Web Search

The accuracy can vary, but it's a good way to get a rough idea.

Compete is good too.

Alexa may be good for technology related sites where most viewers got alexa toolbar on it. But for most sites its very inaccurate
