I am planning to get my first iPad in the next couple of weeks. My question is: Do I need to activate a data plan in order for the iPad to work, or is it only if I want 3G access to the internet? I was hoping to use my HTC EVO 4G as a mobile hotspot, since I get unlimited data from Sprint for $25/month.

Only if you want Internet over 3G, otherwise no plan is needed. I've used my iPad 2 Verizon 3G model since the day I bought it without any plan or other interaction or activation with Verizon.

Cold Warrior,

Thanks for the quick reply, I thought so, but I wanted to be sure.
