I am trying to link from a website that is hosted on a remote server. I would like to link from my website to my server at home. What would be the correct address to use. I have tried http://www.IP of server at home/library/webserver/documents/index.html. is this right .Is there a better way of doing it, please advise(I'm a newbie to the whole world HTML so be kind).Any help would be great.
If you have a static IP address at home
eg. one that stays at, for example, 212.19.82.70 (which is my work server) then you can link to it by:
http://212.19.82.70/~yourusername/index.html
This only works, however, if your IP address never changes. A lot of cable modem and DSL connections have dynamic IP addresses, which change every so often.
If so, you need a free 'dynamic dns' service, such as
www.dyndns.org. This lets you have a proper domain name that points at your home server. (eg. mine is derbs.homeip.net, because i have a dynamic IP cable mode at home).
Let us know what IP number you've got and i'll show you how to sort it out.
