I opened disk utility today to burn a .dmg and I noticed that Under S.M.A.R.T it said failing(In red).

Is there anything I can do to fix the drive, or is a format the only way out at this point. I ran Diskwarrior and it still says "failing" and techtool pro 4, TTP says that there are some problems but doesn't say how to fix them.

Just alittle confused. I have backups so rither way not a problem.

Thanks have a good one.

AFAIK, if SMART is reporting errors the drive is ready to die. Backup NOW. If someone is wrong physically you can't just format and start over again.

That definitely matches what I've heard. I'd guess you'll be buying a new drive in a few weeks. Until then, keep good backups

WOW AHH DAMMM!.

So failing means that my drive is going to die sooner rather than later.

Thanks
Backing as I type. Time for a new HD Apple.

listen to SMART, it's the law ... if it reports the HDD is about to fail .. it is.

Not necessarily, I've had utilties give false positives. And I know this because these were 3rd party utilties, and running the utiltiy made by the company (IBM) said everything was fine, and the drive in question is running a year later with no problems (it can fail when it wants though, I'd only miss the extra storage space, nothing unique on it).

SMART results aren't quite the law, but treat them like they are. It's the last line of defense against catastrophe ("hey, I've lost control, going to go down in flames!"), so make a MORE RECENT backup (you DO have a backup already, right?). Sarc is certainly right about the important part, SMART may not be right but trust it as if there was no way for the drive to power down and start up again.

SMART isn't a drive test at all -- it's basically a log of all the errors a drive encounters during operation. If it finds stuff going wrong, it makes a note of it, and then the SMART program can just read out if anything is in the log.

SMART warnings most definitely need to be heeded. Drives can fail without SMART giving warning, but it's highly unlikely that a drive with a SMART warning will not fail.
