I do a lot of hobbiest photo editing, but figure the La Cie isn't worth it for a non-graphics pro like myself.

Aside from price, what is the difference between these two monitors?

I thought the Lacie one was colorcalibrated, but it doesn't mention it on the Lacie website.

I don't think you need the calibration anyway. So go for the cheaper one.

But how about two decent 19"? Seriously, far larger desktop real estate.

Well, the 17" is $699, the Lacie is $729.

So how about the 17" Studio Display (it's a beauty, a professor of mine has it)?

Or the dual 19" option, that would really enlarge your desktop.

I really don't have the desk space for two displays... Back on topic however, why is the La Cie display more expensive than the NEC-Mitsubishi?

I thought the Lacie displays came precalibrated and/or have smaller tolerances to ensure better quality. But this isn't mentioned.

In either case, I don't think it's worth it. How about that 17" StudioDisplay? It really saves some space on your desk compared to a bulky 22" CRT.

Those NEC-Mitsubishi's are very nice. I have a Diamond Pro 2060u and love it.

It's hard to say whether the LaCie's you are looking at would be superior or not. I would search for reviews on both. They are fairly close in price.

If you have money to blow look into an FD trinitron or an NEC LCD?

Those are what I'd put my money on. While the NECs only display 4m? colors when being refreshed at under 20ms (think games), they display 16m colors when standing still/over 20ms.

Essentially from what I've heard they're just as good, if not better than samsungs, cheaper, and sometimes look better (though the 172t is pretty sharp.)

It all depends, really. I like the fact your table doesn't get dominated by a monitor afterwards.

Boy, I was in the same boat a few months ago trying to decide which 19" CRT to buy. I opted not to buy the LaCie (and an LCD) because of cost, and ended up buying the NEC MultiSync FP912SB-BK. It's specs looked good compared to other similar units (Viewsonic, Sony, etc).

But I will tell you I am a quite unhappy. I do heavy graphics (Photoshop, typographic layouts-Quark, and web work). For whatever reason, the overall tone of the screen is dull, kind of grayish feeling. It displays whites, but in some instances, like on web pages with lots of white (this forum), everything is just dull. No real vibrancy.

The superbright button is nice for brightening dark games, but for graphics and typography - forget it! Text is blurry, images are blurry.

I'm actually trying to return it so I can buy the LaCie Electron Blue 19". I've used LaCie's at work in the past, and they've always been good.

You probably don't need to worry about the calibration accessories, as you'll be able to do onscreen calibrations and still get good images. The calibrator is really only useful if you sync your scanner's, monitor's and printer's calibration profiles.

FWIW, all my Sony's have been top notch.

I think Mitsubishi makes the best CRT's, if you ask me.

Now, if you're considering an Apple 17" display... consider that my best client just got two Samsung 19" 191T+ displays -- at $650 each.

I use the 19" LaCie Electron Blue 3 and from what I can tell between LaCie and other name brand monitors, is that LaCie's have straighter edges or corners... i didn't even need to adjust any of the geometry. You don't get that bend or curve on the horizontal or vertical edge of the monitor. I think they just have a higher quality control.

You will be thrilled with it.

My last two CRT displays have been Diamond Pros, and they absolutely rock.

My 19" DP 900u is now over 4 years old, and still works like new, the picture is still better than what many el-cheapo monitors can muster when brand-new.

(My mom still uses the older 17" one, it's now over 6 years old.)

I know this is too late to affect your purchase but AFAIK Lacie uses the same tube... However, Lacie does have one of the best warranty policies I've seen.
